The Greenwold Gazetteer

A Guide to the Greenwold

Voyage of the Fallen Star begins in The Greenwold - a heavily forested land of prosperous cities and untamed wilds. Within, Humans, Dwarves, Elves and Halflings make their homes, but things are not so simple as they may appear on the surface. Monsters unnumbered lurk under the eaves of the trackless Tanglebrier, and spill across the Barrens of The Old Empyrean, while the drow devise long-lived plots from across volcanic straits. Civilization balances on a knife's edge, but every gain made by one nation occurs at the loss of another. The realm may be divided up by kings and nobles, but it belongs to adventurers. Treasure, glory and a chance to change the world await under ancient hills, in the ruins of primeval deities, and in forgotten ruins beneath city streets. Fortune in The Greenwold is shaped by the bold. This guide will provide you with the basic info, as well as character options to create a character who comes from this colorful region.

A Brief History of the Greenwold

The four great cities of The Greenwold work together to cling to success in the face of untold beasts and monsters, even as they work against each to their own advantage. Together, with the wizards of the Alabaster Academy, civilization maintains its toehold in this rough and wild land.

Modern history, as it is discussed by the sages of the Alabaster Academy, began over a thousand years ago with the end of the War of the Dragons. For centuries the dragons battled each other for dominance, locking the world in a long dark age as their violent struggles devastated the cities of the lesser mortal races.

The war finally came to an end when a party of heroes forged the legendary Orb of Dragon Souls, and forced the dragons to concede to a peace agreement. The dragons agreed to divide the world into 10 great domains - one for each color of dragon. Henceforth, the dragons would   limit themselves to their domain, and never impose on the domain of another. Some dragons ruled their realms like despots, some became shepherds of their people. Others simply retired to their hordes to slumber until disturbed. When the Orb was rediscovered not long ago, a second dragon war threatened to engulf the Greenwold. However, a new band of heroes arose to master the power of the artifact and save the realm. In the aftermath, the dragons met again and agreed that the Greenwold should be free from draconic rule.   In response to the dragons' withdrawal, the Empyrean, a demigod, moved into the power vacuum. Attempting to expand upon her domain to the south, the Greenwold found itself fighting for its existence in the face of overwhelming divine magic.   Ultimately, the Empyrean was defeated, and the Greenwold entered a new age of prosperity. Free to pursue their own goals without outside meddling, the rulers of the Greenwold returned to bicker with each other and go to war about petty matters.
