Borgaholmr (ˈpɔrkahoulmʏr)
Borgaholmr is a medium sized island in the Norður Islands. While Tyrdur the Lost has placed it in the Eyjaskeggjaheim island group, there are many who consider it to be more appropriately a part of the Volksland group. It sits on the border of these two regions, and has been fought over for centuries. It is usually controlled by the Eyjamaður, especially since the construction of Hamarrhǫll, the fortress lighthouse that protects the island from invasion. Located on the southeastern tip of the island, Hamarrhǫll is the largest fortification in the Norður Islands.
The largest settlement on the island is Róni, a town built around the harbor on the northern shore. Like much of the island, the population is a mix of Eyjamaður and Eots, as the town had changed hands several times over the centuries.
Notable Spirits
The most important god on Borgaholmr is Véþormr the Shipbreaker, the god of Hamarrhǫll. He is revered by the Eyjamaður residents, and is considered a patron to all those who defend against attacks from the sea. The Eots of Borgaholmr are less enamored of Véþormr, and hold Rotbärtig in great esteem instead. Rotbärtig is said to be an ancient king of the Eots who sleeps beneath the island, and will arise to conquer the island and expel the Eyjamaður when the time is right. The Eots claim that the ravens of Borgaholmr are the servants of Rotbärtig, and that when they see the right moment arive, they will awaken the sleeping king. Devotees of Rotbärtig claim that he visits their dreams, and will grant his faithful enormous strength in order to assure his people that he has not forgotten them.
Geography
The island is known for its dramatic granite formations on the southern coast. It rises sharply out of the ocean, and then slopes downward through forests, farmlands, and finally to the sandy beaches of the northern coast. The island is intersected by several short rivers - the largest of these is the Bjórfljót, named for the many breweries that can be found along the 14 miles it runs.
Ecosystem
Borgaholmr has been cultivated for thousands of years, and much of the arable land has been cleared for farming. In the southern highlands, pine forests still cover the landscape, and they are filled with wildlife including deer, wild boar, and many species of birds. Ravens are a common bird on the island, especially in the south. The waters around Borgaholmr are alive with fish, seals, and sea mammals such as dolphin and whale.
Climate
Borgaholmr is known for having many clear and sunny days when compared to other islands in the region. Despite the frequent sunshine, intense heat is rare. During the winter, snow is a frequent occurance, with accumulations of over five feet and drifts over twenty.
