Atabean Trading Company
The Atabean Trading Company (Eise: Atäbisches Handelkompanie), or "AHK," is the largest private business enterprise in The Old World. It is headquartered in the Free City of Karstadt and intertwined with the Free City's government to such an extent that outsiders sometimes consider the two to be a single entity. Though originally formed to unite Karstadt's state-sponsored sea trade under a single administration, the Company has expanded far beyond its original mandate. It exercises numerous quasi-governmental powers, founding its own colonies, minting its own Currency, and even maintaining private military forces.
The AHK is indirectly responsible for discovering the World Gate, having sponsored the expedition that unearthed it, and has formed a wholly-owned subsidiary known as the Gatefall Company to facilitate exploration of The New World. Though the AHK's stakeholders do not directly concern themselves with the New World's affairs, the wealth gained from exploiting its Resources inevitably finds its way into their coffers.
