Currency
Currency, in a general sense, is any standardized medium of exchange for goods and services. The term typically refers to coins, banknotes, and trade bars issued by a National Government, corporation, or other large organization. Currencies derive their value either from the material of which they are made or from the issuer's guarantee that they may be exchanged for a fixed amount of some valuable commodity. In The Old World, most Nations issue their own Currency, as does the Atabean Trading Company.
The Atabean Guilder, often referred to simply as a "gold piece" or "GP," is the preferred currency in the Free City of Karstadt and the colony of Gatefall. It is a circular coin minted from one-third of an ounce of fine gold which bears the emblem of the Atabean Trading Company on the obverse and the coat of arms of Karstadt on the reverse. One Guilder is equivalent to ten silver Stuivers or one hundred copper Duits. Other commonly traded coins include Eisen's gold Groschen and silver Thaler, Montaigne's gold Livre, and Dunlagh's silver Shilling.
In The New World, Adventurers have discovered various coins of indigenous manufacture as part of Treasure hoards. The Archaean Empire, for example, struck five distinct types of coins. One gold Aureus is equivalent to three electrum Siliquae, six silver Denarii, twenty-four bronze Sesterces, or sixty copper Nummi and contains approximately 50% more gold than an Atabean Guilder.
