Zephyr, otherwise known by his birth name of
Canton Haiges, is the personal agent of Grand Duke
Ulder Ravengard and a former ally to the
Breadwinners.
History
Early History
Born in 1456, Haiges grew up and urchin in
Waterdeep with an innate connection to magic that allowed him to become a fairly successful. This criminal nature eventually put him at odds with Open Lord
Dagult Neverember, who Haiges tried to steal from. Rather than punishing the boy,
Neverember saw use for his magic talent and trained Haiges to work for him personally.
In 1487, Haiges, now going by the codename Zephyr, was sent on a clandestine mission for the
to infiltrate the mansion of Grand Duke
Ulder Ravengard in
Baldur's Gate and retrieve an item of magical import. The mission required complete plausible deniability, so when Zephyr was caught by
Ravengard's Flaming Fist,
Neverember claimed Zephyr was acting on his own. The Open Lord then volunteered his services to
Ravengard for an indeterminate time as an apology. Over the next few years Zephyr would establish connections all across
Baldur's Gate's underground, all while working in
Ravengard's employ.
In Uktar of 1491,
Jessabelle Leonin and the
Breadwinners convinced
Ravengard of the eminent threat posed by the
Cult of the Dragon.
Ravengard was unable to join the burgeoning
Council of Waterdeep without the full support of the
Council of Four, but he told the
Breadwinners that if they could find
Cult of the Dragon activity in
Baldur's Gate, it may convince the
council.
Ulder Ravengard then offered the services of Zephyr, both to help the adventurers and to keep an eye on them.
Ravengard gave the
Breadwinners three potential leads: the recently strange behavior of Councilwoman Arabella Porter, the oddly lavish parties thrown by Counselor
Edward Dawnspear, and
Lysara the Grin, the head of
Baldur's Gate's underworld, though the last lead was included so the adventures could perhaps deal with the crime lord for
Ravengard.
Zephyr used his connection at
The Last Laugh to get the
Breadwinners into an initiation trial for
Lysara's gang. He also brought them to
Doug Glass, a well known forger. During his time with the
Breadwinners, Zephyr helped uncover a
Cult of the Dragon plot to blackmail a
changeling into acting like Councilwoman Porter and secured
Dawnspear's support by getting
Leonin to support the naturalization of his bastard. However, during the the initiation into
Lysara the Grin's gang, one of the
Breadwinners,
Amber, died, a death that Zephyr felt responsible for. This perhaps motivated him into helping stop the assassination of the
Order of the Gauntlet Whitehawk,
Eilidh Stormheart.
On the 12th of Uktar, 1492, Zephyr joined the
Breadwinners, the
Flaming Fist under
Aella Ravengard, and the
Watch under
Maxwell Solloway in a raid on
The Last Laugh. During the raid, Zephyr and the
Breadwinners managed to destroy the ghost possessing
Lysara and Zephyr himself barely managed to keep
Lysara from dying, though this put great strain on him. Due to this effort, Zephyr would be bedridden for most of the
Baldur's Gate Uprising.
A year later, on the 2nd of Marpenoth, 1492, Zephyr would be one of the eight allies of the
Breadwinners to join their mission to prevent
Tiamat's resurrection during the
Battle at the Well of Dragons. He and the other allies held back the
Cult of the Dragon forces, while the
Breadwinners fought both
Don Rel and subsequently
Bastion.
After the War
Shortly after the conclusion of the
Great Dragon War, Zephyr was able to secure his release from
Ravengard's employ, citing his years of services and efforts to stop the
Cult of the Dragon.
Ravengard agreed, and Zephyr returned to
Dagult Neverember, now the Lord Protector of
Neverwinter. Zephyr was incensed at being loaned for nearly half a decade, so
Ravengard assigned Zephyr a new, cushier mission: to infiltrate the
Blackstaves of
Waterdeep.
