The Orb was a metallic sphere created to safely house the Power Stone.

History

Origins

It is unknown who created the Orb, though it has been theorised that it was created by the ancient Kree, due to it having been hidden within the temple of the Gods of Pama on Morag, one of the first planets to be colonised by the Kree Empire. Alternatively, it may have been created by the orignal pre-colonial inhabitants of Morag.

Discovery by Peter Quill

The Orb was sought by both Thanos  and the Collector, both seeking to assemble all the Infinity Stones for his own reasons. The Broker, knowing he could command a high price for the Orb, hired Yondu Udonta to retrieve it. Udonta dispatched Peter Quill to Morag to retireve it, however Quill betrayed Udonta, taking the Orb for himself.

While trying to sell the Orb on Xandar, he was attacked by Gamora, who had been hired by the Collector to retrieve the Orb.

Their fight attracted the attention of the Nova Corps, and they were arrested. They were sent to the Kyln, where they met the other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. 

After escaping from prison, the Guardians retrieved the Orb and took it to Knowhere, intending to sell it directly to the Collector. However, they were attacked by Ronan the Accuser and Nebula, agents of Thanos, who stole the Orb.

Battle of Xandar

Ronan sought to use the Power Stone to destroy Xandar, due to the Nova Empire's recent war with the Kree Empire. He was opposed by the Guardians of the Galaxy, Yondu's Ravager Crew, and the Nova Corps.

The Guardians were eventually able to retrieve the Power Stone from Ronan, using it to destroy him before returning it to the Orb.

In the aftermarth of the battle, the Guardians gave the Orb to the Nova Corps to protect.
