Moons of Theras

The world of Theras has three distinct moons:   Luna, a manifestation of Lune, has a cycle of 10 days and shines white. It is the largest moon and usually shines the brightest.   Sehaine, a manifestation of Sehanine Moonbow, has a cycle of 30 days, with its hue shifting from white (winter) to green (spring) to orange (summer) and then to blue (autumn). It is slightly smaller than Luna and doesn't shine as bright, though it shines slightly brighter than Luna at the midseason tenday.   Kas'shi, a manifestation of Nyx, has a cycle of 360 days, and shines very dimly. It is generally speaking the smallest moon, and shines in two shades of pink, depending on whether it moves towards (tango pink) or away (lavender pink) from Theras.

Phases

Waning

Sehaine and Lune wane radially from a certain spot near their perimeter, and become increasingly darker, until they are pitch-black; they can still be discerned as they block the stars behind them and seem to absorb all light.   Kas'shi does not wane per se, rather increasing or decreasing in size due to having an extremely elliptical orbit. It is closest on the night of the 30th of Fonacius, when it is as large as Sehaine, and the farthest away on the nights of the 1st of Arn-Wint and the 30th of Lizizil, when it cannot be seen regardless of amplification; it cannot even be observed by magical means, with all attempts causing temporary blindness.

Uncrescention

An uncrescention is a phenomena where either Sehaine or Lune wane in an unusual non-uniform manner, as Nyx's fingers can be visibly seen enveloping the moon in darkness. An uncrescent moon occurs only at the middle of the cycle, when the moon is full; that means uncrescentions may only occur on sekday nights, and Sehaine may become uncrescent only on the second sekday of the month.   The unsettling sight of an uncrescent moon is a bad omen in most cultures, and is indeed ominous in a literal sense. It causes concurrent phenomena, either directly or indirectly:
  • Behvioral changes, such as aggression in wild animals and humanoids
  • Maritime disasters, such as vessels capsizing or becoming lost, and especially shipwrecks.
  • Deadly fire related accidents, such as house fires, collapsed chimneys, and unexpectedly powerful evocation spells.
  • General emotional distress among the clergy of the uncrescent moon's goddess accompanied by specific feelings, such as frequent déjà vus, a crippling sense of impending doom, paranoia, and minor auditory hallucinations of a scraping sound.
  • Unreliability in moon-related phenomena, such as reduced control over shifting forms for lycanthropes and druidic rituals failing with no discernible cause for failure. Approximately 0.8% of all documented acquired lycanthropy instances occurred during an uncrescent moon, according to a 1049 AB meta-analysis conducted in Sophia-Hold.

  • Additionally, an uncrescent moon is a multi-faceted message from Nyx. To her followers, it is an order to further their goals and a call to arms against the uncrescent moon's goddess and her followers. By the virtue of the latter, it is also a formal declaration of war a holy war against said goddess; this war lasts for as long as the moon remains uncrescent, which is ten days for Lune and thirty days for Sehaine. Finally, it is a a direct assault on Lune and Seahine, as Nyx grabs a physical manifestation of them and takes it away.

    Calendar

The cycle of the moons is and was used for timekeeping. Luna dictates the duration of a tenday, Sehaine dictates the duration of a month, and Kas'shi the duration of a year. However, different cultures chose to divide the year in different ways, with several documented calendars.
The Ervenian Calendar is used by the vast majority of cultures on Theras, though under different names. Regardless, the months follow the same order and even have the same names; this phenomena is consistent across different cultures and different races.
The Andorian Count, originating in Epeoris, is the only calendar used on more than a single continent, other than the Ervenian. It is used by followers of the Andorian Pantheon, now present on the continent of Rakion following the Kadian Invasion.

The Ervenian calendar first documented use was circa 6000 BB in Ervenius' Draught, from which it gets it name; over a period of what seems to be no more than a century, almost all cultures shifted towards it. This change was evident and documented in the Menedynn Empire, the Old Ansko Empire, and the coblyn demesnes, which all used their own unique calendar prior; the Nahrso Empire is believed to have used the Ervenian calendar since its establishment, though this is a matter of dispute amongs historians.

The Andorian count is based on the seasons, and is ordered as an analogy between the creation myth accepted by followers of the pantheon and the assosciated deity's role in it: Nymm, the mother, gave birth to it; Rhaan, the father, provided for it; Talador, the sage, taught it; and Eyre, the lord, protected it.   Each god has a month during which they are celebrated, correlating to the last month of the season and the last instance of each color in Sehaine's phases.
