Lorancourt Castle

Lorancourt Castle is the primary residence and seat of authority for the Duke of Lorancourt, Lomain am Lomanni.  It is a particularly unique building in that it is made up of several older phases of defensive constructions within a brand new fortification.    The Castle was originally built as a motte and bailey castle 221 years earlier for the Briar of Lorancourt.  Over the last 60 years, the motte and keep section of the old castle had run into serious disrepair.  The outer bailey's curtain wall had been robbed of almost all its usable stone blocks, and only the two gatehouse towers were functional defensive buildings.   Lomain was made Duke of Lorancourt in 217 AF, and he immediately set about rebuilding the castle at Lorancourt.  Employing nearly 1,000 Blackbeard Dwarves and using only the old motte and keep of the original castle, the fortress today is an ideal example of a modern castle.

Purpose / Function

Lorancourt Castle is the primary residence and seat of authority for the Duke of Lorancourt.

Architecture

The oldest portion of the motte and keep have been restored or rebuilt (called the Old Bailey), and connected to a new Inner Bailey that houses a massive, modern new keep surrounded by six new round towers and 30' walls.  Surrounding the new Outer Bailey are 10 new round towers and a massive gatehouse and drawbridge over a wet moat.  The new castle walls are tied into the new city walls seamlessly and are an integral part of the city's overall defensive goals.

Defenses

The castle is defended by a Company of 110 soldiers and knights known officially as the Castle Watch but known to the locals of the city as Blackguards (pronounced "blag-gard") due to their dark armor and black cloaks. The Castle Watch is commanded by a Knight Commander and is divided into two separate units: the Dawn Arm and the Night Arm. Each arm takes a 12-hour shift manning the walls and gates of the castle grounds while the other arm rests. Each arm is commanded by a Knight Captain and an Adjunct Corporal.   Over-all command and supervision of the Castle's defenses is the responsibility of the Castellan of Lorancourt, Darren Feldman.
