Mōri Matches: Day 2

A record of each individual match carried out over the course of the second day in the Mōri Clan's international tournament.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 1
    Tetsuya Gotō vs. Mōri Takamoto
    Sporting Event / Competition

The first battle of the day was also the first in the Independent Bracket. Two brave souls who had survived battle with Asteria Talos would fight for the privelege to advance. On the left side, Tetsuya Gotō, a wandering martial artist without known allegiance to any clan. On the right, Mōri Takamoto, the eldest daughter of Mōri Motonari herself. Despite the relation, Motonari made it clear that Takamoto would receive no special treatment.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 2
    Randi Carter vs. Sanada Nobuyuki
    Sporting Event / Competition

Following the first match, Randi Carter and Sanada Nobuyuki took to the arena. While they carried themselves like warriors, both combatants appeared to be little more than girls. A few discerning eyes from the audience caught Randi's magical shield and the skillful way she handled her greatsword. Not lost either was Sanada Nobuyuki's wide sleeves, packed with hidden weaponry. These points were taken into consideration for the inevitable betting which transpired behind the scenes.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 3
    Nabeshima Naoshige vs. Hachisuka Masakatsu
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the morning sun began to rise higher, the third match of the day was announced to be between Nabeshima Naoshige, a Daimyō from the western Hizen Province, and Hachisuka Masakatsu, archress of the Silver Meteor Storm. Both took to the arena and prepared to fight. Masakatsu had her signature bow, of course, while Naoshige appeared unarmed and unarmored save for a simple bamboo rod in one meaty hand.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 4
    Honda Tadakatsu vs. Ōtakemaru
    Sporting Event / Competition

A feeling of almost tangible tension swept over the audience as Honda Tadakatsu and Ōtakemaru finally began their much-anticipated battle. Both were semi-legendary figures. The invicible warrior, who had never been wounded in battle, versus a goddess of the Oni.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 5
    Tsukahara Bokuden vs. Ono Shigeyuki
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the match between Tsukahara Bokuden and Ono Shigeyuki was slated to begin, a curious series of events conspired to intervene. First, while calling out the names of the competitors, Mōri Motonari found only Bokuden's title on the parchment. Shigeyuki's name had been scribbled out. Fortunately, her compatriot in the stands, Yufu Korenobu knew who was up next. While Bokuden herself had taken to the arena, however, there was no sign of her proposed opponent.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 6
    Gotō Mototsugu vs. Kikkawa Motoharu
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the previous match's gory finale was cleaned up, the two next combatants were called to the arena. Gotō Mototsugu, on one side, was a curious samurai ghost who lingered in this world thanks to a bad encounter with Honda Tadakatsu. The battle had ended with Mototsugu cut in half, at the waist, and so her spirit was now able to move her torso and legs independently of each other. She seemed to be able to keep high spirits despite this strange physiological situation. On the other side, Kikkawa Motoharu was one of the three famed daughters of Mōri Motonari, on the Kikkawa line. Though not as physically imposing as her sisters, she had put up a good showing in the preliminaries by slaying Yagyū Jūbei. Here, Motonari made sure to mention again that those of her blood were not to receive any special treatment in the battles ahead.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 7
    Bedivere vs. Maxim
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the morning wore on, the participants in the seventh match of the day took to the battle sands. On the left side, Bedivere stood proudly in resplendent armor. Her counterpart was simlarly geared in full plate, with the same western style to his weapons. It was a somewhat open secret that this was none other than Knight Commander Maxim, returned from the dead. There were still many, however, who only knew him as the mysterious Albionite Swordsman. The two exchanged friendly, formal greetings in their native tongue, and then prepared for battle.

  • Day 2; Independent Match 8
    Kiban vs. Kobayakawa Takakage
    Sporting Event / Competition

Before the final match could take place, the battle between Kiban and Kobayakawa Takakage had to be fought. Many thought they already knew what the outcome to this match had to be, yet the mores of the tournament were still to be observed.   As the two took to the field, Kiban began by thanking Takakage for fighting her "even though ugly." Motonari's eldest paused, unsure whether that was self-deprecation or an insult. Regardless, the spousal announcers called the match to a start, and neither of the two hesitated.

    Sporting Event / Competition

Rounding out the independent matches for the morning was the long-awaited battle featuring Amago Haruhisa, daughter of Shuten-dōji and Ibaraki-dōnyo, and vassal-daimyō of the Amago Clan. Facing her was Yufu Korenobu of the Tachibana, now under Hashinara command.

  • Day 2; Clan Match 1
Yamada Brothers vs. Takeda Double Braves
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the sun passed its zenith and entered into the afternoon, manifold guests of the Mōri Clan returned to Shimonoseki and its arena for the second set of the day's matches. Starting off the second bracket of team battles, the representatives of two clans had already taken to the field. On one side stood Yamada Arinaga and Yamada Arinobu, the Yamada Brothers representing the Shimazu Clan. Opposing them were Sanada Yukimura and Sarutobi Sasuke, together making up the Double Braves and representing the Takeda Clan.

  • Day 2; Clan Match 3
    Benki Plus One vs. Dokugunryū
    Sporting Event / Competition

With another relatively short battle finished, representatives of the Ryūzōji and Aotsuki Clans cleared the field in order to allow the next competitors to descend. On the eastern side, this meant two members of the Date Clan. Namely, the Daimyō himself, Date⚔Masamune, and his girlfriend, Katakura Kojūrō. Opposing them were Musashibō Benkei and Shōta, representing the Hashinara Clan. The disappearance of Shōta’s body and the subtle change in his behavior upon reappearing were known to several in the crowd at this point. Mōri Motonari and Maxim, in particular, paid close attention to the lanky boy standing alongside Benkei.

  • Day 2; Clan Match 2
Blade Kittens vs. Are They Participating
    Sporting Event / Competition

As the victorious Shimazu brothers left the arena, Mōri Motonari began to call the next competitors to the field. Scheduled to battle were the Ryūzōji Clan's Blade Kittens versus the Aotsuki Clan's champions, who had not chosen a name. As Ryūzōji Takanobu prepared to descend, however, Motonari received an urgent message and called a halt to proceedings.

  • Day 2; Clan Match 4
    Mountain Shadow vs. Blessed Presbyters
    Sporting Event / Competition

It was only mid-afternoon when the final clan match of the day commenced. Akechi Mitsuhide and Shibata Katsuie took up position on the western side of the field to represent the Oda Clan. Meanwhile, their opponents, Steffi Schawngau and the demonic Ketzi’ah of Sancta Sedes, alighted to the east. Few in the stands knew the full capabilities of either side, although Mitsuhide had been a thorn in the side of all good and rational people for some time.

  • Day 3; Clan Match 1
    Blade Kittens vs. Yamada Brothers
    Sporting Event / Competition

Maxim and Ryūzaki Sanosuke arrived back at their seats in the tournament stands just in time to see the first two clans take to the field. These next matches were to make up the semifinals and determine which clan teams would be competing for the title of champion. For this match, Ryūzōji Kagetada and Yagyū Jūbei represented the Silver Meteor Storm, or Ryūzaki Clan, on the left. Across from them, brothers Yamada Arinaga and Yamada Arinobu stood for the Shimazu Clan. Both were known to be onmyōji and had previously brought their familiars onto the field with them. The two Wani standing behind those siblings were not, however, quite the same team which had accompanied them the first time.   This discrepancy didn't go unnoticed by either of the Cardinal Generals watching from different spots in the stands. Hadn't there been some kind of enormous, jellyfish-style yōkai hiding in the canal when the Shimazu brothers fought yesterday? Sanosuke was informed by perceptive Motoyama Tsugutoshi, while Maxim relied on his own senses to look for the creature. Indeed, there it was, lurking as a dark spot under the water of the northern canal. The Silver Meteor Storm team received a mental warning that they would be facing a total of five combatants, but since the jellyfish had not seemed too important a force in yesterday's match, little more came of it before the match began.
