A record of the matches, victors, and events associated with the Mōri Clan's Martial Arts Tournament held in Shimonoseki in 1559.
On the second day of the Mori Tournament, before matches had officially started, Yagyū Jūbei approached Ryūzaki Sanosuke and asked for a moment of his time. Having spoken to her sister, Yagyū Munefuyu the previous night, Jūbei had handily done away with all her previous misconceptions. Now aware that the Hashinara were not her enemy, nor the enemy of her master, she offered an apology. It was her desire to reunite with Tachibana Muneshige as soon as possible, and so she would be starting on a pilgrimage to The Palace of the Firebird immediately.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
Whilst Maxim chatted with "Paseguru Kamui," Aotsuki Tsukamoto and his sheele, Kagami, had noticed something. In the shadow of the Knight Commander's considerable form, a dark presence had just ducked out of sight. Judging from the misfortune that had just then taken place in the arena as well, that could only be the Binbōgami Kashirin. Still wary of the dark spirit, Aotsuki wasted no time in mentally informing Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
With the sheer shock from seeing Akechi Mitsuhides soul devoured lessening, Mōri Motonari found the presence of mind to call the day’s activities to an end. She explained once again that board and accommodations would be prepared for those who wished it, and that some light entertainment would be held in the arena until the day’s evening.
As the sun passed its zenith and entered into the afternoon, manifold guests of the Mōri Clan returned to Shimonoseki and its arena for the second set of the day's matches. Starting off the second bracket of team battles, the representatives of two clans had already taken to the field. On one side stood Yamada Arinaga and Yamada Arinobu, the Yamada Brothers representing the Shimazu Clan. Opposing them were Sanada Yukimura and Sarutobi Sasuke, together making up the Double Braves and representing the Takeda Clan.
With another relatively short battle finished, representatives of the Ryūzōji and Aotsuki Clans cleared the field in order to allow the next competitors to descend. On the eastern side, this meant two members of the Date Clan. Namely, the Daimyō himself, Date⚔Masamune, and his girlfriend, Katakura Kojūrō. Opposing them were Musashibō Benkei and Shōta, representing the Hashinara Clan. The disappearance of Shōta’s body and the subtle change in his behavior upon reappearing were known to several in the crowd at this point. Mōri Motonari and Maxim, in particular, paid close attention to the lanky boy standing alongside Benkei.
As the victorious Shimazu brothers left the arena, Mōri Motonari began to call the next competitors to the field. Scheduled to battle were the Ryūzōji Clan's Blade Kittens versus the Aotsuki Clan's champions, who had not chosen a name. As Ryūzōji Takanobu prepared to descend, however, Motonari received an urgent message and called a halt to proceedings.
Post-tournament, as the crowds began to leave the Mōri arena in Shimonoseki, several Hashinara generals, too, found interests elsewhere to pursue. Aotsuki Tsukamoto traveled to Mino Province with Saitō Dōsan to handle the leftovers from some of his previous days’ adventures. As well, Ryūzaki Sanosuke returned to Wakigami upon the request of Tōdaisen Nobuhara, to help him clean up a mess that had sprouted up in the generals’ absence. That left Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Maxim in the dwindling crowds.
When Akashi Kengyō departed, he left Maxim and Ikeda Tsuneoki face to face and blade to blade. Invoking his knightly honor, Maxim offered his opponent one last chance to put down his weapons and surrender. Tsuneoki, however, was too wrapped up in his vengeance, pinning all of the injustices he had faced on the Hashinara Clan and refusing to back down. There could be no other outcome. Maxim challenged Tsuneoki to a duel.
It was only mid-afternoon when the final clan match of the day commenced. Akechi Mitsuhide and Shibata Katsuie took up position on the western side of the field to represent the Oda Clan. Meanwhile, their opponents, Steffi Schawngau and the demonic Ketzi’ah of Sancta Sedes, alighted to the east. Few in the stands knew the full capabilities of either side, although Mitsuhide had been a thorn in the side of all good and rational people for some time.
After the bodies of the unfortunates from last match had been cleared away, those last four remaining fighters in the semifinals took to the arena without delay. Musashibō Benkei was to represent the Hashinara Clan, aided at least nominally by Shōta or whomever now possessed his body. Pitted against them were the Presbyters of Sancta Sedes, Ketzi'ah and Steffi Schwangau. Shōta in particular seemed to have caught the little succubus' attention. Not because of his lanky, awkward frame or dull expression, but more because the soul inside didn't match his outward appearance whatsoever. While most humans weren't able or hadn't bothered to check on the lad, to a creature which feasted on souls this discrepancy was fully apparent.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
Those ephemeral white flowers dancing upon the floor of the arena had already been stained red by the violence of the previous match. Treading upon the illusory field now came Hachisuka Masakatsu of the Hashinara and Randi Carter from Celephaïs in the Dreamlands for the second independent match of the day. Randi had proven herself an able combatant with a few Dreamer-specific tricks up her sleeve. Masakatsu, however, was a veteran of many battles with a number of kills already under her belt and the advantage of a ranged weapon. The winner of this particular match would be difficult to judge. Kikkawa no Myōkyū, standing in for her ill wife, marked the beginning of the round.
In addition to the crimson-stained petals of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's illusory flower field, a large stained-glass cube now squatted in the northwestern corner of the arena, a relic from the previous match. The cube's southern side displayed an inviting chasm leading inside, but neither Honda Tadakatsu nor Kōtenbō showed any inclination to make use of the new facet as they took to the field. Tadakatsu commented that Kōtenbō had some skill, a rare compliment from the "Strongest Warrior in Japan." The other cryptically stated that his strength was only a byproduct of his training, not the goal of it. Many in the audience who had seen Tadakatsu in battle before knew what was to happen next. That strength was about to be broken.
The crowd in Shimonoseki's arena hadn't yet had time to recover from the brutal display that was Kōtenbō's loss at the hands of Honda Tadakatsu. After more than a moment of silence, Kikkawa no Myōkyū attempted to rouse the crowd once again with the announcement of this round's fighters. Sasaki Kojirō, esteemed Kensei loosely affiliated with the Silver Meteor Storm, would be clashing with Ono Shigeyuki, amazon Twin Wall of the Tachibana. The two took up sides across from each other and waited for the maidenly announcer to begin their match.
When the two fighters from the previous match either staggered off or were carried back to the stands, a new pair descended to the flowered sands to replace them. Gotō Mototsugu, ghostly victim of Honda Tadakatsu and a Spear Pillar in her own right, was to face against Tsutsui Junkei of the Oda Clan. Mototsugu was a seasoned warrior, and a wraith to boot. However, Junkei had performed exceptionally well in the preliminaries. This had potential to be a close fight, although the crowd's cheers seemed to favor the former over the latter.
The last match to grace the flower-littered sands of the arena had been "refreshingly simple," but things were about to take a dark turn. Knight Commander Maxim, leader of The Wolfpack mercenary organization took to the field to face his opponent, Marilène Leclair of Sancta Sedes. Maxim was known to many as a powerful warrior who had defied death itself. Marilène, in contrast, was a green Deacon of the church with little combat experience to her name. She had survived the ordeal at the Palace of the Firebird, however. Perhaps she did stand some chance.
A somber pall had fallen over the audience at the conclusion of last match. What's more, this coming battle showed little promise of dispelling that gloom. Hōjō Ujiteru descended from the stands, silent and expressionless as a doll. Many had seen her in her previous fight and the preliminaries, aided by some enormous unseen creature. Hashinara Yoshitakatomo was able to mystically detect a powerful undead looming over the girl, and Aotsuki Tsukamoto beheld in Kagami's mirror a gargantuan skeleton, crouched on all fours like a beast. To everyone else, even those with eyes able to pierce the mystical, nothing hinted at the presence of the monster save for its actions in combat. Even the flowery sand in the base of the arena remained undisturbed. To face this unnerving opponent came Kobayakawa Takakage. She seemed tense, angry, and ready to avenge the loss her elder sister, Mōri Takamoto, had suffered earlier that morning. That this opponent had nothing to do with that loss did not seem to matter to her. Takakage was searching for an outlet.
The last match of the morning was set to begin as Momo and Amago Haruhisa both descended onto the field. The former was a member of the Hares of Inaba, bodyguard to Yakami-hime, and apparently quite an accomplished martial artist. By her own admission, she wasn't really certain why she was participating. Due to the fact that she'd been granted a bye in the bracket, this would be the first time the audience had seen Momo fight since her brief showing in the preliminaries. Her opponent came with a much more storied reputation following her into the ring. Amago Haruhisa was Vassal-Daimyō of the Amago Clan and Bugyō of Bingo Province under the Mōri. The Amago family had not gone as peacefully into subjugation as many of the Mōri Clan's conquests, and it was no secret that Haruhisa chafed under the other's rule. What's more, she marked the union of Ibaraki-dōnyo and Shuten-dōji as the daughter of two Onigami. This accounted for Haruhisa's monstrous stature despite her relative youth and promised great power in her future as she developed, a prophecy certainly not lost on Mōri Motonari.
Maxim and Ryūzaki Sanosuke arrived back at their seats in the tournament stands just in time to see the first two clans take to the field. These next matches were to make up the semifinals and determine which clan teams would be competing for the title of champion. For this match, Ryūzōji Kagetada and Yagyū Jūbei represented the Silver Meteor Storm, or Ryūzaki Clan, on the left. Across from them, brothers Yamada Arinaga and Yamada Arinobu stood for the Shimazu Clan. Both were known to be onmyōji and had previously brought their familiars onto the field with them. The two Wani standing behind those siblings were not, however, quite the same team which had accompanied them the first time. This discrepancy didn't go unnoticed by either of the Cardinal Generals watching from different spots in the stands. Hadn't there been some kind of enormous, jellyfish-style yōkai hiding in the canal when the Shimazu brothers fought yesterday? Sanosuke was informed by perceptive Motoyama Tsugutoshi, while Maxim relied on his own senses to look for the creature. Indeed, there it was, lurking as a dark spot under the water of the northern canal. The Silver Meteor Storm team received a mental warning that they would be facing a total of five combatants, but since the jellyfish had not seemed too important a force in yesterday's match, little more came of it before the match began.
Dawn arrived, the sun rose, and the Mōri Clan's Martial Arts Tournament began once again. Each of the Hashinara Cardinal Generals had opted to attend this morning in the company of their retinues. Each, that is, except Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, whose personal business kept her* in the Dreamlands for now. In place of the Daimyō, Sheele Hashinara Kiyowara took her* spot in the box. Other guests might be forgiven, however, for assuming that Tōdaisen Nobuhara was the clan's true representative. As was familiar by this point, Mōri Motonari and her wife Kikkawa no Myōkyū took turns welcoming the various dignitaries and announcing the day's events. First among these was the independent quarterfinals. Those who succeeded would proceed to the semifinals. Between Fubuki and Randi Carter, who would claim this honor? Odds seemed to be generally on the cold-eyed oni, but one voice cried out in support of Randi as the two took to the field. This rather loud Kyūso had apparently dropped quite a hefty bet on the Dreamer and was expecting a great payout in return when she won.
With a minor incident in the stands resolved, the collected faces in the arena were free to focus their attention back on the next match. Both fighters had already taken to the field. On the left: Ono Shigeyuki, Twin Wall of the Tachibana Clan and a known potent force on the battlefield. Opposite her: Honda Tadakatsu, the so-called Invincible Warrior, formerly of the Tokugawa Clan, now operating independently. For all of Shigeyuki's strength, none had ever yet seen Honda Tadakatsu so much as scratched by a single attack. The odds therefore swung heavily in the demoness' favor.
Perhaps there were a few more incidents of interest happening in the stands at this point, but none of them were interesting enough to draw attention away from the morning's third match. This battle saw Maxim of The Wolfpack and more broadly the Hashinara Clan, facing off against Gotō Mototsugu, a ghost. Mototsugu boasted a unique fighting style which involved splitting her top half from her bottom half and distracting her opponent with repeated kicks from behind. It had been strangely effective up to this point. Whether the same tactic would play out against a heavily armored veteran like Maxim, however, seemed doubtful. Odds weighed quite solidly in the Knight Commander's favor.
The last match of that morning was, perhaps, the most unknown of the four. In previous battles, watchers had a pretty strong idea of which competitor would walk away the victor. Between Hōjō Ujiteru and Momo, however, the odds seemed a lot more even. Both fighters were fairly unknown. Indeed, it was a bit of a surprise either had made it this far. At the same time, they had both displayed unique fighting prowess that made them opponents to be respected; Ujiteru with her great invisible protector, and Momo with a kick that could shatter oni bones. From above, Mōri Motonari and Kikkawa no Myōkyū welcomed the competitors to the field. Ujiteru took up position on the left, with Momo stretching and bouncing in place to the right. The crowd hushed until Myōkyū bid the fighters to begin their match.
"Try not to hit me too hard this time. That 'shadow' of yours packs a punch." Such was Fubuki's opening statement as the mysterious swordswoman faced off against Maxim in the ravaged Mōri arena. This was to be the final round of the independent bracket, and therefore the tournament as a whole. Both fighters had powers not yet plumbed, and the audience held its collective breath, shuffled to the edge of their collective seat, and awaited the foreign barbarian's reply. He gave none.
