The Edge
The Edge Theme:
At the highest peak in western Tyras, the bones of the first Saint, Ignacia, form a towering monument to her legendary power. Her body sprawls across the entire mountain, and the site of her last stand, Ignacia's Rest (pictured above), draws pilgrims from far and wide, representing a multitude of faiths and scholars. It was here where Saint Ignacia's Heart was pierced by a massive orcish sword, leaving her mortal body behind as her soul was forced to ascend. Just like Ignacia herself, Frontiersmen who have made the Edgelands their home are often seeking independence and freedom from the burden of societal expectations.
The Edge is a land of breathtaking mountains, home to numerous independent tribes, powerful dragons, and formidable hermits. The air hums with magical energy so potent that even those without any innate talent feel its presence. Visitors speak of the hairs on their arms standing on end, unsure if it is the chill of the air or the magical aura that surrounds them. Along with this energy, fierce dragon lords compete for territory, with their deafening roars echoing through the valleys below. The various communities that call this land home offer a diverse array of experiences, from the Goliath camps to the Owlin enclaves, from Gnome towns to Duergar hovels, and from Harrengar Villages to hermit homesteads.
Jedorah, the Silver Dragon-Lord, perches atop Ignacia's Rest with keen eyes surveying the endless expanse below. Rumors abound of the metallic and chromatic Dragon-Lords who dwell within the mountain range, enlisting the help of the indigenous tribes as bodyguards and servants in exchange for protection and arcane wisdom, sometimes even establishing cults in their honor. Brave souls who dare to venture past the treeline are warned to tread cautiously, as they may come face to face with the formidable Dragon-Lords of the Edge.
On the inlet shores north of the Pergamon Canal, the immense halls of of the Giantkin city of Gahvik tower over the landscape. The enormous ceilings and doors are made to accommodate giants, though pure giantkin are now rare in Tyras with smaller goliaths making up the majority of Gahvik's population. As one of the only ports of The Edge, Gahvik operates as a critical supply line for mountain exports.
Built into a glacial crevasse in northwestern Tyras, the gnomish town of Blipio stands on a precarious ice crossing made by the Cobalt Dragon. The draconic sorceress, Regarda Sendmai, leads their mages tower, growing the influence of the mountain gnomes and advancing their and their patron dragon's interests. The ice around Blipio encases a variety of monstrous creatures, dragons and horrors, in trueice (ice formed from a dragon's breath).
In the valleys between the northern and southern mountain rages of The Edge lies Duergar hovel of Gallowspire, with a single tower jutting above ground. Beneath the spire exists a subterranean kingdom that goes deep into the earth where the tyrant queen, Kedara Greymane orders her followers to mine. Gallowspire is the last remaining dwarven settlement that follows 'the old way', or the dwarven custom of building deep underground.
The owlin enclave of Arunachal was built high above the dragon line on the second tallest peak in The Edge. Though this would usually spell certain doom, their policy of offering food and rare plants to the dragon-lords have granted them safety. There are no roads that lead to Arunachal- one must fly to the location over cliff faces. The storm herald, Chivadri Ravine leads the enclave and manages communications with dragonkin.
Formed from the shattered remnants of harrengon villages that fell to dragons, Yelle is a newly founded city built for the protection of bunnyfolk. Ruled by the farmer-turned-general, Sphagnum, and lined with hare-trigger ballistae, the anti-aerial defenses of Yellevgive any approaching dragon pause.
The peoples of the edge are proud, fiercely independent, generally welcoming, and playful. The Mountain Goliath sport of Sling King, first observed by Rings of Ileyna Scholars to The Edge, has garnered popularity in aristocratic societies throughout Tyras, as its visceral fast paced nature draws in both crowds and gamblers. While remote, tales of travelers coming back from The Edge tend to speak to the warm local hospitality.
