Notes and Crap (entry thirty-six)

by Eligius Yami

Today marks three days since we've begun our march towards finding the Immortal Flames, developments were sure interesting to say the least. The information the Winter's Children had on the Immortal Flames was mostly combat reports, being unable to breach the Shores of Glass, alongside a few shred bits information on their leader and figureheads. Two names came up, that of "The Father of the Phoenix", and the "Daughter of the Phoenix." Not at all foreboding that they'd likely be able to resurrect from the dead, biggest question at the moment's how to make sure they stay dead, or incapacitate them to make sure they never threaten anyone again. Wasn't much to go on regarding any encampments, but that's what we get for facing a cult that lives in a desert made of glass.

So, with the little info we got, we traveled north, towards the town of Demonitis, a town half glassed over by some Primordial Phoenix incident well over a century ago. What bewilders me besides the devastation that this one elemental left behind is the townsfolk's refusal in deconstructing the old buildings that were half melted.... a century ago. They did have a memorial on the glassy side of town, names of each life lost in the incident, so my assumption is that they were kept in place in memorial to those lost. Despite that... harrowing sentiment, the townsfolk seem well adjusted to living in this environment. We stayed for a bit, got water, rations and eye protection from the rather blinding reflections of the sun on the glass, so this is what it's like being Filea on the surface. I do not like it; I choose having my eyes not burning.

With purchasing goods out of the way, and no devil in sight, our group marches westward into the unknown, a sea of glassy death. I must say... it miserable, and we've been going through water like nobody's business. The glassy surface while being clear enough to see all the way down to bedrock was radiating heat from below, to which I ended up using some of the power granted by the nature crystal to shield us, giving some reprieve from the overbearing heat. It took a day and a half of nonstop marching before we found a mound that wasn't flatlands, we found a half melted down wall and seems to be what's left of a small temple to an unknown deity.

It seems our first sign proved fruitful, we found signs of life here, Immortal Flames cultists occupied the settlement. They heard us coming however when Goth tripped on the ground, causing a ruckus with his armor. I admit, I froze with choice paralysis on what to do in setting up a trap, I could have used all the explosive runes I made, but only casted a minor illusion to attempt in diverting attention, way to go genius. The cultists though, something else, much more fanatical I shall give them that, wearing armor wreathed in continuous flames, that exploded upon their death, and mages, not sure the of what type whether sorcerers, wizards or such. Maria and Goth took care of the more martial focused cultists, while the rest of us took care of the mages. The mages I must say, I am thoroughly disappointed in their abilities to control fire, these were clearly bakas (idiots), lower recruits of their cult that I am able to cast circles around them before they could cast even a cantrip!

Naturally, even if it would have been useful, no one took prisoners when in this case it would have been extremely useful. We did however find a small snip of a book off one of the cultists, it had a rather concerning passage:

"...and lo, the orphan was found, and her hair aglow like embers; an lo, did the father take her, raising her as his own..."

Eligius' notes: Likely a very indoctrinated member of the cult, the "Daughter of the Phoenix", no idea the age, origin (aside from being inside the Fields of Glass), or magical capability. I'm going to be assuming to be extremely strong in pyromancy, possibly has properties belonging to that of a Phoenix. High risk of combat if faced.

I hope our efforts will bear greater fruit, and that my friends will make it out of this alive. I'll write more later next time I rest.
