She was exhausted. By the end of the day, she was always tired. Her mentor, currently in monkey form due to the need for thumbs, sat at the large table filling in forms. Her mentor's friend was a spider and was in the middle of a dance-off with her imps. ["What even is my life?"] thought Scarlet.
Walking over with the newest stack of paperwork, she asked Sniffles, "The R&D group has had some success with the new farm equipment?"
Sniffles took the forms from her and skimmed them. She changed into her starry form so she'd have a mouth so speak with. Handing them back, she told her, "Sounds good. Glad you took my advice to secure the property. Considering how much damage they've done so far."
Looking down at the write-up, Scarlet sighed, "At least no one is hurt. We still haven't figured out the power issue, but we got the main design completed." Sniffles nodded, finishing her stack and sliding it to the left. Scarlet helped her slide a new stack in front of her, and she started working on that. She looked over at the wolf spider and the imps and muttered, "I wonder who's in the lead."
Sniffles whispered back, "Avat. He'll be insufferable tonight."
Scarlet shook her head and sat next to her mentor. The conference table had stacks and stacks of paperwork. Scarlet was not looking forward to organizing this tomorrow. Looking over the security memos, she slid one over to Sniffles, who flipped a page and pointed at a paragraph. Scarlet obediently re-read it and asked, "I don't understand what you're trying to show me."
Sniffles jotted a few notes on the paperwork in front of her and, once done, turned to tell her, "E.309.342.3456 has been completed."
It took several minutes for her to recall what that meant, but once she did, she re-read the whole memo and gave an exasperated sigh. "I'm never going to see the end of this, am I?" she asked her mentor.
"Nope, this will be a problem for the next 1-3 years. We've thankfully reached a quarter of our goal."
Pouting, Scarlet rested her head on the table. "I feel like nothing has been accomplished, though."
Sniffles patted her back and murmured, "There, there. These things weren't built in a day. You're doing a good job."
Scarlet continued to pout and mutter under her breath about the unfairness of it all.
They worked silently. Scarlet eyed the partition, wanting to close it to muffle the noise but knowing better. The back area where her desk and records lay was already closed off. She didn't want the imps to 'play' back there. They had a tendency to make a mess when they were just trying to be helpful. She took a moment to watch the current scene and turned to ask Sniffles, "So what have you two been up to?" Sniffles continued to write as she updated her child, "Oh, I've been doing what you think I've been doing. He's been out in the Fae wilds as per usual."
Avat took this time to head over, changing back into his regular form, and asked, "Need help?"
Sniffles immediately retorted, "Please, stars, no. Keep the imps busy."
Pouting, he asked, "Can I read?"
Sniffles slid over a form to him and asked, "But you're terrible at filling in paperwork."
Avat took the paper from her, read it, and two seconds later slid it back. "Yep, you're right. That looks like bookwork."
She saw her mentor smooth her expression into a patient, kindly smile and became worried. "Have you found DD or Pip?" Sniffles asked.
Avat turned himself back into a spider and continued dancing with the imps.
Looking over at her mentor, she asked, "Have they not been found yet?" Sniffles shook her head as she continued to write. Scarlet gently asked, "Are you still und-"
Sniffles cut her off as she informed her child, "Yes. I'm still under it."
Scarlet sighed, wanting to hug her, but from the set in her shoulders, she knew she shouldn't try. Nodding, she continued to work side by side with her mentor. They didn't finish; there was too much to do, but they did make a dent in the mounds that needed to be addressed. Scarlet helped Sniffles move the papers to the back area, where her desk and the records were kept. After they locked up, the group began to head out. Sniffles would rendezvous with her intelligence network, and Scarlet would herd the cats/imps home. She had an early day tomorrow, a breakfast brunch with many of the businesses she had ties with was to be held, and she would network. Sighing, she sat back in her seat, the carriage making its way back to the Meadows.
Once home, she wrote in her journal, "E.309.342.3456 completed. Only 20 bajillion steps to go."
