Marie de Maisondeux

Lady Marie Anabelle Clara de Maisondeux

A young captive with a wary disposition. Her clothes are obviously foreign to these lands and while there are clear signs of repair with local ingredients an ornate fabric appears on something of a skirt that seems accustomed beyond even Eivurn. Her ginger-brown hair is tied into a neat braid and her soft eyes seem fearful if willing to trust you.

Personal history

Marie was born in the small county of Maisondeux found in the south of Celium in the Three Rivers region. Her father was the second son who yearned for adventure and so plunged his mind into learning and exploring the surrounding area, a trait that was concerning to his father until the line of succession was secured and Marie's father didn't risk their future. As her father told it his bagged were packed and caravan ready the day his second nephew drew his first wail.    Marie's father travelled throughout Celium meeting and marrying his wife, another third child whose wild antics led her father to be overjoyed at the proposal offer, who quickly gave them young Marie as a child. Not wishing to live their lives stationary once more they committed to taking their child on their journeys to courts throughout the land in search of a fantastic ruin that they would explore with their daughter when she came of age.    Their adventures were less exciting than imagined however and only six years after Marie's death did the pair get ambushed and kidnapped by a Solstein raiding party. Seeing her parents as capable workers they were taken into slavery in the city of Calgurn where both began plotting an escape. For five years the pair toiled teaching Marie of the world and how to read and write as best they could. Then her father, whilst on a shift, siezed an opportunity and fled promising to return with an army to free his family. Unfortunately he made it only a days ride south of the Calgurn pass before he was caught and executed with his desecrated corpse serving as a reminder as to why the slaves should follow the rules.    Marie's mother lasted two further years until she succumbed to a spreading plague that nearly took Marie's only life but for good fortune. Now thirteen and alone Marie wished for nothing more than an improvement in her station and began working hard and giving instruction, written or otherwise, to her peers. Noticing this the Warchief Skade took Marie into her service as a courier and spy to send her will across the other clans.    Marie served this role well and was generally well received by the other clans who admired her etiquette and willingness to teach others her skills. Gradually she earned herself something of a 'freeman' position with her own quarters in the Great Hall of Calgurn and a horse to ride between the clans with but still she remained a slave to the jarl in any legal sense.    When Calgurn was attacked Marie returned to the slave pens and eventually helped lead them to flee. With a handful of others she joined the party hoping to find a peaceful outcome that didn't cost the 'kinder' clans any harm.

Employment

Marie served as a courier, and to a lesser extent advisor, to the Warchief Skade giving her a strong knowledge of the valley and the clans within. She has brought messages and offered tutoring in literacy to many of the clans at the Warchief's request and can identify most of the important figures within the land.

Mental Trauma

Marie was forced to see her father's desecrated and slowly rotting corpse for three months after his escape and has lived in slavery for nearly all of her life. She regularly struggles to sleep facing horrific nightmares and has little knowledge of the world beyond the valley besides those few things she had heard from stories and hearsay.   Marie has no grounded sense of family or home and little sense of permanent security fearing at any moment she may lose those she cares for and fall victim to the world around her.

Intellectual Characteristics

Despite being a slave Marie is a skilled linguist and learned to speak, and where possible read, in the tongues of those she was trapped with. This has allowed her to read many books stolen on raids in Calgurn during her work for the warchief leaving her surprisingly literate and well read.
