Valbrand
Valbrand Ruriksson, of Clan Braende
A young man with a well crafted bow and simple hide garb. He has a tired expression and sparks of fire can often be seen dancing along his fingertips.

Special abilities
Valbrand is a shifter from his fathers side and can become a ginger-haired husky with some difficulty. This ability is not known to the wider clan and Valbrand rarely changes shape but when it is absolutely necessary.

Personal history
Valbrand was born to Rurik and Freya of the Braende Clan. The pair were veteran raiders and capable pyromancers who ultimately settled onto a small farmstead on the outskirts of Ild, the Braende hold. As farmers they raised Valbrand teaching him their skills and preparing him for a life as a raider in the clan. Beyond the village Valbrand's youth was quiet and peaceful with much of his everyday interactions being with his family or the slaves kept on to help run his stead. He had several friends in nearby farmsteads he would sneak away with but as Jarl Lagertha became increasingly vocal and aggressive against the Varcheg the ease with which Valbrand could visit his friends was greatly reduced.
With their farm on the perimeter of the hold Valbrand's parents were more vocal than most in their uncertainty over Lagertha's choices. This ultimately culminated in a heated argument during a ting meet where Freya accused Lagertha of kinslaying and attempting to collapse their clan. Lagertha responded by ordering the execution of Rurik, Freya and several other alleged 'conspirators' that sought to defame their Jarl and break their oaths of loyalty. Lagertha's loyalists sent to the farmstead executed the slaves and captured a Valbrand after he killed two of their number.
Lagertha had initially intended to execute the son but inspired by his talent for killing spared the child on condition he watched his parents burn. Tied up the 'conspirators' were put to the flame and died a slow horrible death as Valbrand watched. He was given over to one of the Braende champions to be raised loyally to his Jarl but quickly fled back to his farmstead.
Lagertha made little effort to find the boy assuming he would return when he needed food or shelter and instead called her Clan together in light of the news of an army approaching the valley. This allowed Valbrand to prepare for his attack on the Jarl firing arrows at a target and living once more in his parents farmstead. Here he was found by Merric, Raz and Kanuna and was taken on as the squire of the latter.

Lacking a formal education Valbrand remains illiterate with only basic numeracy skills. He is however a capable pyromancer, for his age, and a talented archer.
Mental Trauma
Valbrand was forced to watch his parents execution by fire and holds a deep seated need for revenge in his heart. Deeper than this however is his sense of isolation and uncertainty that has lingered as he realises he has been left without any other in the world. Valbrand seeks revenge first and foremost but beneath that wishes for a place to belong.
Morality & Philosophy
Raised by raiders Valbrand's morality is in line with the values of Solstein. He sees little issue with raiding lowlanders and enemies of his Clan but does endorse loyalty and honour within a clan or community.
