Fearann Dorcha aka The Dark Land
The Fearann Dorcha ("The Dark Land") is a large mixed temperate (deciduous) and boreal (coniferous) woodland that spans and covers the north central region of Sgitheanach Dubh.
The forest is home to both Wood Elves and Island Elves as well as pockets of humans and other forest dwelling denizens. The Elves and their cousins, the Fey-kind, live in small isolated villages, hamlets or camps.
The village of Bracadale along the west coast is a mixed race settlement as is thought of as the "gateway" to the Dark Land. Citizens of the forest tend to come to Bracadale for supplies, given its port and location along the sea.
The Faery Road is the main transport and travel thoroughfare through the forest. The road generally southeast-northwest from Port Ree to Dunvegan Town. Numerous other paths of various sizes and conditions crisscross the forest.
The canopy is thick and heavy with limited light reaching the ground (thus the "Dark Land"). The ground is thick with detritus and decaying leaves and plant matter. The smell is not overwhelming, rather sweet and pleasant. It has a calming effect and seems to remove fears and anxieties. Travelers through the forest can tend to lose track of time as well as direction if they are not very mindful. Only citizens of the wood, especially the Elven folk and Fey-kind, are immune.
