Dun Skudburgh

Dun Skudburgh is a circle of standing stones found near the west coast of the Trotternish Peninsula not far from the Tower of Storms. Laying at the southern end of the North Coast region, the Dun is northwest of Uig and Uig Bay.   The circle is one of many sets of standing stones constructed by ancient peoples over 3000 years ago (approximate length of recorded modern history). No one knows who built the circles (including Dun Skudburgh), but most people know or believe them to be imbued with strong ancient magical powers. Most locals aor try to avoid) the circles as a precaution in case evil spirits inhabit the places.   The stones themselves are carved granite from local sources. The stones stand 15-18 feet tall. Most are warn, pocked and pitted from storms that hit the coast with some frequency. Moss and lichen cover most stones to some degree or other.

Geography

Dun Skudburgh occupies a low rise not too distant from the crossroads of two main thoroughfares in the North Coast region of the Trotternish Peninsula.    The hill rises approximately 90-100 feet from ground level.

History

No one knows the true history of Dun Skudburgh. Several theories abound.
  • The circle was an ancient temple
  • The dun was the burial site of a powerful noble
  • The circle acts as a portal to other dimensions
  • The circle was a calendar and weather station
  • The dun was the legs of a giant table top (long destroyed) used by giants for meals.
Some, all, or none of the rumors may be true. What is clear is the stones have clearly seen use (by humans or others) and abuse (by the unpredictable weather of the North Coast).   Recently sightings of inhuman beings have been reported.
