Queen Alena, daughter of the Last Orc King

Orc Monarch

"No force, no blight, no evil, shall keep the people of Keel from their homeland.”
Queen Alena, also known as Alena, daughter of Torai, was an orc monarch of the Queendom of Keeleon who appeared in Azimuth Campaign One. She was an NPC played by M.B.   Queen Alena was a princess of the Kingdom of Keeleon during the time of the Zenethian Heroes at the end of the Fourth Age. She was the last known survivor of the royal family of Keeleon after the destruction of the capital during the Tarterian War.   In the Fifth Age, she returned with her people to Tarteria and founded the Queendom of Keeleon, starting a matriarchal dynasty. The Queendom now stands as a major force in the region, and her efforts and alliance with the Zenethian Heroes has done much for orckind.

Description

Appearance

Queen Alena was a broad-featured orc woman. She was somewhat short for an orc, which made her of similar height to humans. Her tusks were not very prominent. She kept her head shaved. During the events of the Zenethian Heroes, she was equipped with a well-made but unremarkable breastplate with tufts of fur at the shoulders and collar. After she was crowned as queen, she wore a finer set of plate armour and a vibrant golden cloak. She wielded two hand axes.

Personality

Despite her young age during the Tarterian War, Queen Alena fought hard for the safety of her people and quickly rose to be what her people needed. She is regarded as a guiding figurehead for the orc people in a time of great uncertainty. She took to leadership well and was able to set aside any sense of mourning at the loss of her family and country and place the needs of her people over her own feelings.   Queen Alena was willing to put in personal effort to accomplish her goals and aid her people. She personally led her remaining forces in battle at the Battle of the Bay of Shipwrecks and the Battle of the Iron Marshes. She was also directly involved in many aspected of the early stages of Keeleon's rebuilding.   She was a practical leader and was aware of potential limitations and dangers. She did not seem subject to any feelings of pride or arrogance about the strength of the remaining Keeleon forces, choosing to leave instead of fighting a lost cause. She was pragmatic enough to realise she would need outside help to reclaim the losses of the war and driven enough to work towards getting it. She also seemed willing to work with those who could aid her causes, even if there were issues between them. This was seen by her willingness to bring Corthag as a representative to the war council in Branca despite him impersonating her at the orcish prison camp.   She was a skilled diplomat and was clearly able to negotiate even from a position of having little to offer. This was seen by the treatise that established dual fealty over certain regions of the Southern Orcish Plains with the Hobgoblin Khanate, a government which during the early Fifth Age had a somewhat stronger military presence than Keeleon at the time.

Biography

Background

In the late Fourth Age, Princess Alena was born to the royal family of the Kingdom of Keeleon in Keeleon Castle. She lived in the castle in her youth, and she had a number of retainers, including the orc shamaness Agatha.

Campaign One: Zenethian Heroes

At some point before 4A 995, Esturk, The World's End, was awoken from his slumber early and began to influence the world. This was the start of the Tarterian War.   Over the course of 4A 995, during the battles of the war, the forces of Esturk would beseige and destroy Keeleon Castle. Princess Alena was the sole known survivor of the Keeleon royal family, and she and a handful of her retainers escaped southwards.   Near the end of 4A 995, after the remaining Keeleon armies were scattered in the Southern Orcish Plains, Princess Alena led the surviving populace towards the coast to flee Tarteria. Here, she met the Zenethian Heroes. The Heroes provided a missive for aid from King Alphonse Brancana, which Princess Alena accepted and promisesd her aid if she was able. At this time, Princess Alena asked the Zenethian Heroes to aid the orcish survivors that had fled from the north of the country to Santeem, as she had heard her people were being held prisoner there after seeking refuge.   She and the remaining survivors then left the country on several ships and headed across the Azimuth Ocean to the Kingdom of Endor. In the lands of Endor, Princess Alena parleyed for aid for her people. With the influence of the Zenethian Heroes, High King Thorik Oathenhammer opened the way for orcish refugees to settle in Endor, the First Mountain.   In late 4A 996, a war council was convened at the Brancan capital. King Alphonse Brancana led this council and discussed the strategy for defeating Psaro with representatives and leaders of the gathered nations, including Princess Alena. Afterwards, the allied armies marched eastward to the coast of the Wild Lands.   On the coast, Princess Alena and the few orcish warriors under her command boarded vessels. In the Parthenian Bay, she participated in the Battle of the Bay of Shipwrecks. With the battle won, the fleet landed on Parthenia, where the Battle of the Iron Marshes occured and the minotaur forces of Parthenia were largely destroyed. Princess Alena was severely wounded during this battle, but she survived and would fully recover.

The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings

On 29 Janafen 5A 004, Princess Alena and many surviving orcs returned to Tateria. She founded the settlement of Alena's Landing in the Serra Coast. She declared the end of the Kingdom of Keeleon and announced the founding of the Queendom of Keeleon. She was crowned as the first monarch.   At some point in the early rebuilding of Keeleon, Queen Alena moved the capital from Keeleon Castle to Kievs.   In the wake of the Tarterian War, the regions near Hezrou Pass were claimed by the Hobgoblin Khanate by the right of the blood shed to defend them. This caused much tension between the Khanate and the fledgling Queendom.   After Grand Khan Drack's disappearance, Queen Alena used this time as the Khanate was leaderless to negotiate an ammendment to the Treaty of Sword and Axe, resulting in dual fealty over certain parts of the Southern Orcish Plains near to Hezrou Pass, and ultimately avoiding war.   Eventually, Queen Alena died and was succeeded by her daughter who became the next monarch of the queendom.
