The þamtans1 are one of the main jútrilían elven ethnic groups that inhabit western Jælondis, along with the Erens to the east. Most of the population is found in the country of Þamta by the Niþvú Sea and its former colony of New Þamta in the Southlands, with smaller communities being found in Erenúm to the east and major coastal cities in southern and eastern Jælondis.
They are related to the Jolþi and Æjalans in southern and western Þjaris to the north, respectively, and prior to the latter's isolationist period, þamtans formed a significant minority in Inaþis and other þjaric coastal settlements. Following the devastating Fell Wars and end of the þjaric elves' isolation, the relationship between these groups has strengthened again, this time between the þamtans and jolþi in particular.
Burial is the norm in þamtan funeral rites, specifically placing the bones of the dead in cists similar to those used by the Maþúlans, with the exception of more pious arctolaters, who usually prefer the body to be lowered into a peat bog. Hybrid burials are also practiced among some þamtans, which include excarnation in the form of leaving the body out in the wild and whatever bones remain are later buried in a cist.

Culture
Cuisine
Traditional þamtan cuisine is based on millet- and rye bread and porridge, fish such as flounder, salmon and char, various seabirds, beef, dairy products (especially sour cream), vegetables like thistles, onions and water caltrops, fruits, honey, mead and fruit wine. Most dishes come in the form of stews or particularly soups, usually served with bread or sour cream.Religion
As in many elven cultures, the main faiths practiced in Þamta are based on the ancient triad of dendrolatry, pyrolatry and arctolatry, with a particular emphasis on the lattermost one, of which there are several branches. Though their culture is influenced by these faiths in many ways, the majority of þamtans today are irreligious and partake in major celebrations for tradition's sake rather than piety. Certain customs and superstitions are still prevalent though, such as using nicknames for bears when in their presence to avoid their wrath.Burial is the norm in þamtan funeral rites, specifically placing the bones of the dead in cists similar to those used by the Maþúlans, with the exception of more pious arctolaters, who usually prefer the body to be lowered into a peat bog.
