Dwarves are one of the sapient species that inhabit Borgalor, native to the Qug Mountains in central Jælondis which still form the core of their civilization along with the surrounding lowlands, particularly the regions of Ójom and Ytvía to the east and south, respectively. Notable dwarven communities are also found in the Southlands, the largest of which being centered on the country of Tos Q'eillen, as well as in certain southwestern jælondic cities prior to the region's devastation during the Fell Wars.
Since that horrible conflict, certain dwarven countries have emerged as the major power on Jælondis and play an important role in borgalorean politics and technology as a whole.

Appearance and abilities

Dwarves are closely related to Humans and (more distantly) Elves, and aside from being notably shorter and stockier than the former on average, the two look similar enough that the other peoples of Borgalor tend to lump dwarves and humans together.
Dwarves are generally stronger than humans and well adapted to life in the mountains, possessing powerful heart and lungs, deep-set eyes to shield them from the strong sunshine at higher elevations, greater tolerance to low temperatures and resistance to altitude sickness. This resistance along with other abilities is one of the main reasons the Qug Mountains have long been the center of dwarven civilization, as it allows them to travel quickly between mountain peaks, valleys and subterranean cities without having to spend time resting while adjusting to rapid changes in air pressure on the way.
Compared to humans, an untrained dwarf can cast more powerful spells than the average untrained human, particularly at close range, but would not be able to use magic for as long before needing to rest. As such, many traditional dwarven schools of magic put emphasis on efficient use of magic and arcane martial arts.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Currently, the most powerful countries ruled by dwarves are Eimpfiq'elía and T'üllma in the Qug Mountains, Kikra and Ninnirt Zö in Ójom, and Tos Q'eillen in the Southlands.
In addition, some of the most powerful corporations in Borgalor were founded by dwarves, most notably Qe'e Co. which produces everything from tools to horse carriages to video game consoles.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Dwarves speak a number of different languages and dialects, most of which feature ejective consonants, glottal stops and otherwise uncommon sounds such as /p͡f/. Üllemic is the most widespread language in the Qug Mountains, while among the lowland dwarves it's njóþic and kikrönic.
Several sacred languages also exist among different dwarven communities, particularly in monastic orders and in more conservative countries.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Religion

For much of their history, the vast majority of dwarven states have been theocratic absolute monarchies and only during the last few centuries has there been a shift towards constitutional monarchies or republics, but religion forms an important part of the lives of those who live in the latter to this day.
While usually polytheistic in nature, the deities in most native dwarven faiths are believed to rather distant and are thus centered on the worship of deified rulers, ascetics and other important people believed to have formed a special connection to the gods, to which people direct their prayers in hopes of them reaching the deities in question. Among more conservative cultures, only the monarch and certain members of the clergy can commune with these deified persons, while elsewhere this role is more closely associated with monastic orders.

Art

Mythological scenes, sacred mountains -particularly Mt. Eqel-, rainbows, astral and solar imagery are common themes in dwarven art, along with animals associated with certain deities. While paintings, tapestries and metal objects are common mediums, the most elaborate works are those carved in stone, ranging from statues and stelae to entire tunnels and cliff-faces.
