Gnolls
The wildest, most violent and vile of the beastfolk and perhaps all of the sentient races are the gnolls. They earn nicknames like laughers, and gigglers with their distinctive cries, while others like bone crunchers and scum seem self explanatory. Gnolls have hyena-esque heads with large, powerful jaws. Their fur is generally shades of tan dappled with spots, though rare all black variants also occur. Their eyes are most commonly yellow, red, or green. They mature quickly, around age three or four, and live between thirty and forty years. Their small roving packs used to span the breadth of southern Miridia, but concerted efforts have driven out most beyond the borders of civilized nations. They still make occasional forays into the Brightgrass Sea of The Pasture, but generally are confined to the Miridian Mountains and the abandoned peninsula south of the Blasted Wastes simply called The Boneyard. A gnoll’s primary concern is its hunger, and they will attempt to sate it with any meat they can get their jaws around. They are not in the employ of even the most evil dragon curses, as they cannot be trusted not to eat their allies, including other gnolls. This is the primary factor limiting the size of their warbands, as soon as they begin struggling to feed all of their members they will turn on one another. So all encompassing is their hunger that they spend very little time crafting their own weapons of shelters, preferring mismatched arms and armor picked from the bones of their victims. Their language, just called Gnoll, seems reasonably complex, perhaps most similar to Lycan. It is unclear what message or messages the maniacal hyena laugh is meant to convey, as they rarely go more than a few seconds between cackles. Gnolls are fierce and competent fighters, but thus far no one can wrangle them enough to capitalize upon their abilities.
