Glasswerks
Glasswerks is a district in New Carydam. Located in the northcentral part of the city, it is, as the name suggests, known for glass-making. Artisans in the district use the shale from the Stonetalons and other locations to produce startling and intricate glass creations.
Glasswerks is also the oldest district in the city, as it was home to the originally "Supervisor's Hall" of New Carydam. It formed the heart of the settlement for its first fifteen years.
Demographics
While historically the home of tradespeople and artisans, those crafters have been largely displaced by the financially fluid and upwardly mobile, drawn to the "charm" of the district.
Industry & Trade
Despite the encroachment of non-artisans, Glasswerks still remains the heart of the glass-making industry in the Free Cities of Marlock. The remarkable skeinglass produced by the craftspeople of this district is sought throughout Keshloam and is particularly prized in the construction of structures of worship and devotion.
History
It is well known that the first major industry to form around New Carydam is skeinshale mining. Second to that, according to most scholars, is glass-making. Talented artisans soon discovered that the shale left behind during the skeinshale melting process made for remarkable, and malleable, glass. Soon after that, the glass trade in what became New Carydam was born.
Recent arrivals in the Werks include not only apprentice glass-makers, but also those wholly ignorant of the trade of glass, but with substantial resources. The result has been an increase of rent and expenditures of the tradespeople working in the district. Many have been forced find new places to live and work.
