Carydam Catacombs
The Carydam Catacombs is an extensive network of tunnels and ossuaries that traverse under New Carydam. There are dozens of entrances and exits throughout the city, but the most prominent one is in Godsmount.
The catacombs existed well before the most recent articulation of the city, and most conservative estimates wager that some of the ossuaries go back well into the Unknown Eras.
Captain Bones is the self-appointed caretaker of the catacombs. Carydamians are happy to leave that role, such as it is, to him.
Recently, some of the bones in the catacombs have gone missing, and are presumed Displaced. Various organizations and individuals have had an array of responses to this event: Displacement of Bones in the Catacombs.
Infrastructure
The dizzying twists and turns of the catacombs reach all throughout New Carydam. Each tunnel contains one or more ossuary chamber.
The Dedication of the Chronicle claims to have an accurate record of every passage in the catacombs, but many Carydamians find that claim hard to believe because it is well-known that new tombs underneath the city are constantly being discovered.
History
The catacombs are thought to have had the most use in eras before recorded history. The cities that existed here before New Carydam in more recent history are also thought to have made extensive use of the ossuaries and crypts within the tunnels.
Now, the catacombs exist more as an object of research and a bastion of civic and historical pride.
Points of interest
The Black Walls are thought to exist somewhere in the labyrinthian confines of the catacombs.
Tourism
While recreational tours of the tunnels are discouraged (particularly by those in Godsmount), booking a guide--or venturing in without one--has become an increasingly popular group activity.
Natural Resources
The tempatation to search the catacombs for plunder and treasure has been there since the very first days of New Carydam. So far, this temptation is largely resisted, thanks to social mores and a fastidious watch kept by those in Godsmount.
