Sylvan Knolls

"Such thickly wooded hills can hide incredible sights. Every time I go for a walk, I find some new curiosity."   ~James Ghillifree, Sheriff of Neklek

Geography

The Sylvan Knolls are an extension of the Foothills , eighty miles wide from East to West and twenty four miles tall from North to South at its thickest point. Unlike most of the rest of the Foothills which is dotted with small copses of trees, it is thickly wooded with a dense canopy.

Localized Phenomena

A pair of Hochriss collide overhead and connect to a Gelrime that runs below the ground, feeding an aquafer. The connection causes frequent thunderstorms, tamed in recent years by the Tower of the Zenith.

Fauna & Flora

The dense canopy provides shelter from the storms that batter the area, dropping nuts and sheltering the more delicate plants from the winds. Thickets of blueberries, gooseberries, and Berrythorn spring up, and fields of root vegetables like radishes, turnips, and onion bulbs provide the rest of the forage in the area. The moisture allows for pervasive and rapid rot, giving rise to a wide array of mushrooms.   Squirrels, rabbits, and stags are the primary prey animals along with large flocks of red pheasant. Pestletails have difficulty fitting through the dense trees so adult herds typically go around, though juveniles sometimes wander in.   Sylvan Knolls is short on predators, with a single pride of cougars that rarely if ever bother travelers.

Natural Resources

Fur and lumber are the primary trade goods of the region, with subsistence harvesting of meat and root vegetables.
