Faeling

"Folks over at Faeling are good at using all available resources. When they butcher an animal, none of it goes to waste. When they break a wagon, every board and axle will be reused. They don't even think about it, it's just what they do. Sometimes I bring parts of the Faeling Balatar along on a campaign just to help me with the looting."   ~Margrave Arronax SkinnerElector of Cambreath

Defences

Faeling has two walls, one at the base of the hill on which it sits and the second halfway to the top. On the very top of the hill stands an ancient keep built before the First Year by some unknown entity.

Industry & Trade

Faeling is powered by a robust leather and fur industry. Very nearly every business or craftsman is at least tangentially connected to the leathermakers, tailors, and furriers of Faeling.   Ranchers own large swathes of the area controlled by Faeling, where they raise large herds of cattle and goats.   Trappers and hunters also ply the hillsides for the stags, goats, and vewavs that roam the wilderness.

Infrastructure

Faeling has 16 wells scattered throughout the settlement, a large windmill just outside town for the grinding of grain, and a large warehouse for storing meat and flour.

Guilds and Factions

Faeling is a town under tension between the ranchers and the trappers who compete for territory and for buyers of meat and skins.

History

Faeling was founded in 128, shortly after the Scalepurge. A Czhahyl caravan sheltered in the Citadel Cynosure. They began to trap and, in the absence of immediate dangers, they set up leatherworking shops and furriers as well as a large underground warehouse to store salted and preserved meats. From there, the settlement gradually grew into a functioning village, around which was erected the the Rubblewall in 230.    The village continued to grow, occasionally retreating behind the Rubblewall and even more occasionally retreating into the safety of Citadel Cynosure  In 480, the slums on the outside of the walls had developed into a legitimate portion of the city and they built the Greenwall to protect this newly incorporated portion.

Architecture

The center of the village is the oldest portion, impossibly ancient and built by inhuman hands. The fashion of the newer, human construction is to build up fired-dirt houses over wooden frames and lay wet leathers on the outside and freshly cured furs on the inside. When the both of them dry, they constrict and pack the fired dirt tighter, creating durability and insulation.    The Citadel Cynosure is built from only twelve enormous stones of an unknown, apparently unbreakable type, carved into a complex three dimensional jigsaw of a castle.   The Rubblewall was assembled from the shattered remains of an ancient village built like the Citadel. The pieces were hauled into place in a rough approximation of fitting together, with the gaps filled with melted lead whenever possible.   The Greenwall was constructed out of normal granite harvested from small quarries in the Barrier Mountains, which were then painted green, the colors of the guard.

Geography

The town of Faeling takes up one particularly large hill that has a steady slope. Each 'ring' of the hill has been flattened smooth for construction before the next ring, with each ring holding a bock of buildings. The hill has 6 such rings.

Natural Resources

The resources of Faeling are almost entirely centered around the livestock and wildlife of the Foothills: cattle, deer, and goats with all associated byproducts, but especially the leathers and furs.
