Government

At the heart of Kuhlmgrut’s governance is the Molten Throne, a grand seat of power forged from mithril, gold, and steel, where High King Thrain Stoneheart presides. Adorned in a crown of finely crafted mithril and a regal cloak, King Thrain is a wise and respected leader with a council of advisors to aid him in governing the city.   The council members are highly skilled specialists, each overseeing a crucial aspect of dwarven life:   High King - Thrain Stoneheart: With a long, braided beard adorned with gems and a sturdy frame, King Thrain is a symbol of dwarven strength. His crown bears a large hammer and anvil, symbolizing Kuhlmgrut’s dedication to both creation and protection.   Master of Mines - Balin Graniteforge: Responsible for the mines, Balin is a broad-shouldered dwarf who is always covered in a layer of fine dust from the mines. He’s known for his practical nature, symbolized by the pickaxe he carries, and is respected for his expertise in mineral exploration and resource management.   Defender General - Durgan Ironbeard: A warrior clad in intricately engraved plate armor and wielding a massive warhammer, Durgan is a seasoned general. His braided beard incorporates trophies from defeated foes, signifying his victories. He oversees the military defense of Kuhlmgrut and is especially vigilant against threats from the Underdark.   High Cleric of the Forge - Thora Emberbrand: Clad in ceremonial robes, Thora carries a sacred warhammer and is the spiritual guide of Kuhlmgrut. She is often found within the city’s grand temple, leading rites and overseeing blessings for all forged goods.   Guildmaster of Commerce - Borin Copperstock: With a sharp mind for business, Borin is a shrewd negotiator, always donning garments made from exotic materials acquired through trade. He is tasked with overseeing Kuhlmgrut’s economic affairs, ensuring that the city remains wealthy and that trade routes are maintained.   Master Engineer - Dwin Stonebridge: Dwin is the genius behind Kuhlmgrut’s infrastructure and engineering. Recognizable by his crafted goggles and tool belt, he constantly inspects the city’s structures, from watermills to mechanisms that light and defend the city.   Master of Lore - Elinor Deepdelve: An elderly dwarf with a silver beard and robes adorned with runic symbols, Elinor preserves the history and legends of Kuhlmgrut. She keeps an extensive library filled with ancient texts and tomes, sharing knowledge of both history and the magic of the mountains.

Defences

Given its position near the Underdark, Kuhlmgrut is heavily fortified. Durgan Ironbeard and his forces maintain a strict watch on the city’s entrances and vulnerable tunnels. Kuhlmgrut’s warriors are known for their resilience, and its defenses include traps, fortified gates, and secret passageways known only to the city’s highest-ranking officials.   Every citizen is trained in basic combat, and they take their duty to protect Crestala’s western border seriously. The threat of the Underdark is ever-present, and Kuhlmgrut is considered the first line of defense should any creatures or forces attempt to breach the surface.

Industry & Trade

The underground lake in the center of Kuhlmgrut not only serves as the primary water source but also as a vital trade route. Boats ferry goods and passengers across the lake, which connects to the city’s network of canals and water pathways, allowing for easy transportation. The docks are filled with warehouses storing precious ores, imported luxuries, and raw materials.

Geography

The mines of Kuhlmgrut stretch deep into the earth, with interconnected tunnels and mine shafts that serve as a vast network of resource extraction. Guarded by Durgan’s forces, the mines are both a source of wealth and a potential point of danger, as they occasionally expose Kuhlmgrut to underground threats. Glowstone lamps light the way through these tunnels, casting a warm, orange glow that contrasts with the dark rock.

Natural Resources

Throughout Kuhlmgrut, giant bioluminescent mushrooms serve as the city’s primary light source, casting a soft, colorful glow over the streets and homes. These mushrooms, cultivated in dedicated gardens, are cared for by a guild of mushroom farmers who view them as essential to Kuhlmgrut’s life. They are also used in the city’s cuisine, medicine, and even alchemy.
