Ilymsureng Hlanwathrai

Ilymsureng Hlanwathrai (ill-EM-sir-reng hlan-WATH-rai) is a Dragonborn from Gradissa Fen, and the current duly elected Keeper of the Natural Lands, one of the Arwenir of Gylidd Syn Aethri.   Her black scales and scutes are contrasted by bone-white ventral scales and long spines webbed in membrane the color and texture of algae form a kind of mane out of her dorsal fin. Low, forward curving horns are frequently adorned in foliage, often serving as a nursery for draping bromeliads that frame her exposed, polyphyodont teeth. Between her brow, set amongst these bony features, she wears a diamond consecrated for the purpose of tethering a lost soul back into its body. Over the decades of her tenure, this diamond had periodically been replaced, and the layer of pale keratin that gives her face its distinctive, skull-like appearance common to her ancestry has become more and more prominent.   Ilymsureng's personality and temperament easily mark her as being a member of the Karannic brood, and she puts her ancestral cunning to work in finding solutions to the many nuanced and complex conflicts that can arise in managing the ecological web of Gylidd. Although possessing a visage some might consider fearsome or frightening, Ilymsureng is known to be a compassionate and approachable person, a patient mediator, as well as an empathic guide for those navigating loss and the natural cycles of life and death.   Her Isinfyran practices are also evident in her use of song and percussion when working her magic. One of her more noteworthy instruments, which also serves as a shield when necessary, is the ridged carapace of the shell belonging to a close friend and cohort who perished during the Nightmares of the Ley and was unable to be recovered. Ilymsureng doesn't speak openly of the exact nature of that relationship, but the depth of her bond is obvious to any onlooker in the emotion and care when she drags her talons across the jagged scutes, giving it voice through her scrapes and taps.   She is known to be a follower of the ways of Isinfyra, Mihere and Xaiith, and they strongly color her Druidic traditions. In the wake of the Nightmares, her proximity to and exchanges with The Briar left her with a greater contemplation of Atnachi in processing of her grief about the wounds inflicted by The Shrike, but the lessons she took from the Thornglove are held close to her chest and are not something she commonly speaks about.

As the Keeper of the Natural Lands

In her role as the Syngaen Keeper, she rarely stays in one place for more than a full turn of the seasons. She travels all over the island, through settlements and wilderness both above and below ground to check on the rhythm of each place and how it connects to the greater whole of Gylidd. Ilymsureng is well known among Gylidder Druidic Circles and other stewards of nature, learning from their expertise of their own protectorates, advocating on their concerns, and mediating disputes that arise.   When Ilymsureng settles for a time, it is almost always prompted by a need to resolve an issue. As a result, her lingering presence has become an indicator of something happening, and while it is often positively received for the aid she brings, it occasionally causes friction with more proud and insular conclaves who might become embarrassed or defensive over a perceived audit. Despite this, high public opinion and confidence in Ilymsureng as the Keeper of the Natural Lands, along with her amicable relationships with the Greyfaith, has seen her elected into the position four times so far — continuing a long tradition of Syngaens often serving for much of their life.   Ilymsureng spent several consecutive years in living in and around Asheido following the Nightmares of the Ley, working with other Isinfyrans to mend the damage done not only to the physical landscape, but the spiritual environment as well. During this time, she stepped down from her position as Keeper of the Natural Lands after three years into her second term to focus all of her attention on the mending of this utmost important veil. An emergency election saw Simidhabinn, an Aedling of the nomadic Libyr Timor and frequent colleague of Ilymsureng, voted in to serve for the remaining seven years of that term between 0 AE and 7 AE. She returned to the Wild Synga afterward with the support of Gylidder voters, serving again as the Keeper into the present day.
