Miriador
Often referred to as the jewel of the North, mostly by those in the empire, and mostly because the Conrigian Empire covets Miriador’s grain production and trading relationships with the elves and dwarves. Miriador has been run by kings in the line of Mirias for 900 years. It is a member of the “Great Alliance '' between Sylarbor, Miriador, Norgaard, and Skuffhimmel. In 482 CE, it was invaded by the kingdom of Barania from the east. Baran’s descendents razed the Miriadorian city of Ayrelon before the great Baranian Army was utterly defeated by the forces of Miriador and Skuffhimmel. In the Battle of the Eastfields the Baranian forces were stopped in their tracks by an army led by the King out of Vilion and reinforced with a contingent of dwarven warrior priests out of Olhall who raced ahead of the dwarf main body. The Baranian forces were pushed from the battlefield and forced to withdraw and consolidate, only to be completely destroyed in the Battle of the North Dells by a combined force of Miriador and Skuffhimmel. And while Ayrelon was no more, the dwarves of Skuffhimmel helped the men of Miriador build a new city on the north bank of the Deepwash and named it Tyrlon, in honor of the Lord of Justice, the god Tyr, who Miriador had called upon in their time of need. Miridorian forces claimed to have witnessed the one-handed god on the battlefield along with scores of Valkyries, slaying the Baranian forces. The men of Miriador erected a Temple to Tyr on the spot of Barania’s defeat. The Hand of Tyr is an order of paladins in service to the god Tyr and based out of Meadehall in Miriador.
Miriador is a kingdom known for its adherence to law. Justice is firm and swift within the kingdom and slavery is outlawed. The law is administered on the local level by the Priests of Tyr who act as judges in criminal cases and civil disputes. The districts in Miriador are governed by Jarls who collect taxes in the form of money and products and in turn pay taxes to the king in Vilion. Each Jarl is empowered to set local laws within the jarldom and maintain a militia paid by and loyal to the Jarl himself. Each Jarl swears an oath of loyalty to the king and pays tribute on a semi-annual basis, usually after early harvest and again after the fall harvest. The Priests of Tyr are set up in Vilion and in each Jarldom as judges under the guidance and auspices of the Bishop of Tyr who resides in the Temple of Tyr in the North Dells.
