James Potter
Lord James Potter (a.k.a. Prongs, Wen Xu Ning)
James was born at Potter Manor in Scotland on the Winter Solstice (Dec 21) of 1842 to Lord Fleamont Potter and Lady Ann Wen. He looked so much more like his mother than his father that many began to suspect that Lady Wen had been unfaithful until James' magic showed that he was clearly a Potter. He lived in Scotland until the age of seven, then moved to China in 1850 to live with his maternal family and indulge his cultural heritage. There, he attended the Chinese magical academy, Shangqing Mao Shan School, to learn to control his powerful passive magic until he came of age to attend school in the UK. He returned home to Scotland when he was 13 in 1856, feeling very much a stranger in his fatherland. He was very quiet when he started Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because he wasn't confident in his English language skills and could no longer speak Gaelic. Despite this, his family lineage and power made him extremely popular at school.
James befriended Remus Lupin and fell in love with Lily Evans, a muggleborn from Ireland. However, James' experiences at Potter Manor were generally negative. His dear Aunt Elinor Potter died when he was sixteen (1859), followed soon by his Great-Uncle Charlus Potter and Great-Aunt Dorea Black when he was eighteen (1861). Fearing that the Manor was cursed when Grindelwald attacked it before he was born, James preferred to spend his summer breaks with his mother's family in Shanghai. Almost immediately after graduating Hogwarts in 1863, James' parents were murdered during an attack on Potter Manor by Voldemort. James became Lord Potter, the last surviving member of the family, and attempted to salvage Potter Manor, but the guilt of his parent's death resulted in weakened barriers, leading him to abandon the manor. James and Lily moved to Edinburgh together, where they were married in 1865. James tried to take Lily to China to protect her when she got pregnant in 1868, but they were attacked by Voldemort and James was badly injured, forcing them to take refuge in Godric's Hollow.
Harry Potter was born on the Autumnal Equinox (Sep 21) of 1868 at Godric's Hollow, where the family remained in hiding until a spy revealed their location to Voldemort. Voldemort attacked them on Beltane (May 1) of 1871. He nearly killed Lily, who used the last of her magic and life to gift Harry with her magic to protect him. James cast a powerful protection upon Harry and fueled all of his magic into his son, creating a curse that would rebound on any attacker. The loss of magic, however, cost James his life. When Voldemort attempted to kill Harry, he was destroyed, leaving the child orphaned with an overwhelming curse wrecking havoc on his magic (Transference).
Some magical scholars doubted if James had really died that night in 1868 considering how powerful he was, believing that he could have easily given most of his magic to his son to save him while retaining enough to survive himself. However, this theory lost momentum over the years as Harry was left to the mercy of his muggle relatives without his father to protect him. Remus Lupin believed that James did more than just protect Harry, gifting his son with his magic because the union of a pureblood and a muggleborn could have resulted in a magically weak child. This allowed Harry to be a wizard when he would have otherwise been a squib, but this theory was also left unproven.

In his youth, James was very self-conscious of his language use. His multi-lingual upbringing resulted in him struggling with certain languages at certain times. From the cradle, his parents taught him Gaelic, Mandarin Chinese, and English. However, when he attended Shangqing Mao Shan School, he lost his Gaelic skills and never fully recovered them. Upon returning to the UK for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was very hesitant about using English incorrectly, and preferred to speak in Mandarin Chinese until he felt sure enough about his English skills to not make a fool of himself. This resulted in him being viewed as shy in his first year at Hogwarts.
