Drowned Jungle

The Drowned Jungle is aptly named. This huge rainforest has an annual rainfall of almost 400 inches, and during the stormy season it can pour down as much as 3 inches in a single hour.   The tall trees form a canopy roof over the damp and dark forest floor, but the place is an explosion of life. As there are no recorded settlements in the centre of the jungle, it has remained practically untouched by mankind, allowing nature to flourish and evolve into a myriad of distinct lifeforms.   The trees that grow in the jungle can reach heights of almost 300 feet. Below this towering arboreal cathedral, thousands of species of plants and fungi have evolved, many of which have found use in food, medicines and poisons.   At higher elevations, above 3000 feet, the jungle becomes a cloud forest. There is an overwhelming number of epiphytes among all the larger trees, and it can be hard to see the sky through the canopy of trees fighting for the light. It is almost always misty here.   Several tribes are reported to live near the edges of the jungle, and they carefully harvest the resources of the trees to build their villages. The largest, the Nyanzar, are the most commonly encountered as they trade with outsiders at the frontier town of Port Nyanzaru.   The Lost City of Amakeo is rumoured to lie somewhere within the Drowned Jungle.
