The Fortenes

The Fortenes were a small tribal group that existed very early in the Time of Trials and predicated the formation of Ione. Originally formed from a group of human refugees that sought safety from the warfare around them, they hid in Sanctum Forest hoping to survive the slaughter of the ever shifting war fronts. After residing within the forest for a year, the refugees emerged “marked” with small, blue, bioluminescent symbols, which came to be known as the Marks of Fortune. These marks were regarded as a form of holy selection and formed the basis of Fortunism and set the initial governing structure of the group.   The group created a small settlement a short distance from the forest, naming it Fortuna after the fortune the forest had brought in allowing them to survive. Shortly after the founding of the city the group began to refer to themselves as The Fortenes and began using the solid blue flag as their standard, likely due to the similarity in colour to the marks that appeared on their bodies. Within the few years of their existence they managed to establish a number of settlements along the Sanctum Forest clearing.   In 375 Cionecic appeared to Haeferic Voss in a vision prompting him to centralize The Fortenes which led to their dissolution and reformation into Ione with Fortunism becoming the official state religion and the primary governing body over the territory.

Disbandment

The Fortenes officially reformed into Ione in 375 and the decentralized nature of the settlements was quickly brought under control of the Alarch residing in Fortuna and Fortunism became the offcial state religion, though it was already the de facto religion in all settlements that were controlled by the The Fortenes. The transition into Ione was fairly painless with all the township leaders agreeing to follow Haeferic Voss after his vision with Cionecic, the patron god that had saved them by protecting them in the forest. The other settlement leaders were given some autonomy over their previous territories but the Alarch would still direct the nation as a whole on behalf of Cionecic.   Some customs and religious rituals and rites, such as the Trials of the Fortunate were adopted by Ione from The Fortenes, essentially unchanged. Additionally, individuals hailing from Fortuna are still refered to as being Fortene.

Territories

The Fortenes expanded fairly quickly along the clearing of Sanctum Forest and the Jhio River forming 5 significant settlements (Fortuna - 251, Vane - 259, Absolus - 265, Kronbruck - 316, Anderselt - 330) before officially forming into Ione in 375. These settlements were very sparsely populated and were very decentrailized. Despite this, all of the aforementioned settlements still exist as part of Ione, though they have significantly grown since their creation.

Religion

Technically Fortunism was officially founded at the same time as Ione, as this was the first time that Cionecic revealed herself to The Fortenes. Despite this, many of the the rituals and practices that were created by The Fortenes were carried through into Fortunism and thus many consider Fortunism to have started with the founding of Fortuna in 251.   The Fortenes are not known to have had any other significant religious following during their existence.

Foreign Relations

The foreign relations of The Fortenes was limited to non-existant during their short existance as the group was primarily focused on survival, hiding away from other groups in the region out of the fear of destruction upon discovery.   The Fortenes were orginally a group of refugees that came about early in the Time of Trials though there is no known record of their allegiances before they became independent.
