The Emperor's Canal

As you enter the city proper, you see that Losgate is divided into a set of various canals, bridges, and colourful boats that navigate around them. There are two large ones that are of particular interest:   The first is the more southerly one. You can see that it is the most important commercial area of the city. Large shops and stores overshadow the main canal and the adjacent street. The canal itself about fifty to seventy handspans across. It's a large canal as well, and the areas near the top of the canal are choked with small boats and the delightful skiffs that the town is known for.

Purpose / Function

The canal serves two purposes in the city of Losgate. It is primarily a trade hub for the city. Most major eateries, high-end shops and wealthy merchants live along its banks, and the largest proportion of local skiffmen work this area of the canal.   The other purpose is to show the power of the Gratic Empire in this region. The clientele and the goods sold along this canal are from all over the Empire, and the government in Gratic City were responsible for the canal's construction nearly three hundred years ago.

Architecture

The canal itself is made out of smooth local stones, using cement to hold them together and prevent damage from the water. The water flows southwards into the canals from Lake Lós, and there is a very slight southward flow to the canals. Large grates on the sides of the canal permit the comings and goings of the canal's cleaners, the drakelings.
