Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption
The Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption, also called the Splinter Realms, is a collection of connected parallel dimension.
They were once a single dimension, Subwhere. Subwhere was splintered by Agamotto, using the Wings of Needless Sorrow, in order to damage the power-base of the Many-Angled Ones, trapping them in the Outer Darkness.
The Splinter Realms are connected by the Winding Way, although some are also accessible from neighbouring realms. Each realm is self-governing, and the Lords of the Splinter Realms have historically worked together only when something threatened all entire Archipeligo.
The most powerful political body in the Archipeligo is the Octessence, a loose alliance of eight of the Lords - Balthakk, Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Krakkan, Raggadorr, Valtorr, and Watoomb - although it is widely believed that Dormammu could defeat them if he were to interest himself in dimensions outside the Dark Dimension.
