Centaurians
The Centaurians originate in the Milky Way Galaxy on Centauri IV. They are one of three sapient species to originate from the Alpha Centauri star-system.
The species are blue-skinned humanoids. They are much discussed by both proponents and opponents of Progenitor Theory, as they bear a close surface resemblence to other humanoid species, particularly the blue-skinned Kree. However, they are biologically very different, being marsupials and possessing near-psychic extrasensory perception.
Along with Humans, Badoon, Kymellians, and Skrulls, the Centaurians are one of the species who were subjected to Kree experiementation, resulting in the creation of the super-powered Incentaurans.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The Centaurians are humanoid marsupials. They have a red bone crest on the top of their head, called the Tahlei.
Unusually among marsupial species, the males of the species carry the young. After birth, the foetus is placed in the male parent's pouch, where they remain until capable of living independantly.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Centaurians have a natural connection to the ecosystem of Centauri IV which lead to their being incorrectly classified as Psychics for many years. This includes an ability to control items made of yaka, most notably Yaka Arrows.
Centaurians also have an empathic connection with other members of their species, known as The Way. However, Centaurians living off-world or apart from other Centaurians can lose this ability.
It is believed the Tahlei may play a role in their ability to use these abilities, as Akuun who have had their tahlei removed are unable to control yaka arrows without cybernetic implants.
Civilization and Culture
Major Organizations
The Centaurians divide their society into two categories, the religious and non-religious.
The religious Centaurians live lives governed by a strict set of rules known as the Circle of Life, with all aspects of their society focussed on religious purity and ataining one-ness with their god, Anthos. Each community of religious Centaurians is lead by a warrior-shaman, and these shaman in turn are governed by the Habaktu, a possition likened to the Pope in Roman Catholicism.
Those Centaurians who do not follow the Circle of Life are known as the Akuun, meaning "ones without faith". The original purpose of the Akuun was to perform necessary tasks forbidden by the Circle of Life. Over time, the rift between the two groups grew, with the Akuun being increasingly oppressed and forced to live in poverty, being denied access to hunting grounds, clean water, and other necessities.
As one of the tasks performed by the Akuun was trading with off-worlders, this oppression lead many to leave their home system in search of a better life. Many settled on the edges of the Badoon empire, interbreeding with the Brotherhood to create the Badoon-Centaurian Hybrids.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
The Centaurian lanuage consists primarily of whistles, with some clicking and grunting sounds. Centaurian vocal chords are capable of speaking more commonly vocalised languages, but it is painful for them to speak for long without resting their throats.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
The religious Centaurians are isolationist, avoiding contact with other species and with the Akuun.
Rampant poverty among the Akuun, and a perception of Centaurians as particularly hard workers, unfortunately lead to a market for Centaurian slaves on those worlds where slavery is not outlawed. Centaurian slaves will typically have their Tahlei removed, an act which is considered one of the worst forms of violation among Centaurians.
Although lacking the strength of some other sapient species, male Centaurian slaves are prized as bodyguards, especially for women, due to their lack of sexual interest.
