the Great Jungle

"The Great Jungle" is a term with two meanings depending on context.   The first meaning is that "the Great Jungle"can refer to all tropical forest in Lustria, period.   The second meaning is the Great Jungle refers to the main sanction of Jungle in the geographic and perhaps metaphysical center of Lustria.

Geography

The heart of the Great Jungle is east of the Spine of Sotek mountains and west of the World Pond but parts of the Great Jungle lap around the mountains to the west or push north past where the mountains end.   Smaller jungles such as the Jungle of Green Mists are distinct in their own way but they still have the same basic flora and fauna of the Great Jungle and the same general climate making these localized jungle variants more or less children of the Great Jungle or extensions of the Great Jungle.   The Great Jungle has a mix of jungle trees and swamps everywhere. Some parts of the Great Jungle are dominated by the trees and other parts are dominated by the swamps but almost every part of Lustria has a bit of both. For instance, the Mosquitos Swamps are famous for having lots of swamps with mosiqutos in them, but that does not mean that the Mosquito Swamps are not part of the Great Jungle and it does not mean that you cannot find swamps with mosquitos in them through Lustria, because such swamps are not exactly uncommon anywhere in the Lustrian jungles.

Localized Phenomena

Lustria's life force is magically augmented beyond what a normal forest or jungle would experience.   On the surface, the jungle plants can be cleared, cut down, or burned like any other plant but Lustria's plants recover and reclaim devestated areas very fast. To a lesser extent, Lustria's beasts will seem to show an unnatural breeding spike if their numbers drop.   It is possible for a careless or malicious group to drive a species of plants or animals permanently or at least locally extinct.   The Skaven have driven a few wild species extinct. The Orcs and Goblins have come close to doing so. Even the First Children of the Old Ones had some close calls by overtaxing the wilds near the major Temple Cities before more wide spread farming programs were adopted to prevent this.

Climate

The First Children of the Old Ones have few physical advantages that make them better suited to surviving the Great Jungle than the younge races though they can weather heat and humidity very well.   Hot and humid, is the default weather forecast in the Great Jungle. It is cooler at night and most Lizardmen prefer to be active in the day, but it is still warm enough in most places at most times of year that Lizardmen are rarely caught on a back foot (or claw).   Most of the Great Jungle has a "wet season" or a "monsoon season" and a "dry season" with intermittant transitional seasons but "wet" and "dry" are relative terms.   It still sometimes rains during the "dry season" but during the "wet season" it almost never stops raining and most rivers, lakes, and marshes expand in size, they then contract during the dry season. The transitions between the "wet" and "dry" seasons are often called "the mud season" for obvious reasons.

Fauna & Flora

Most of the plants and animals seen in the real Amazon Rain Forest can be found in the Lustrian Great Jungle, but the Great Jungle is home to many fantasy creatures such as mighty dinosaurs, surprisingly fast moving carnivorous plants, and freakishly large giant insects and arachnids.

Natural Resources

The Great Jungle is teeming with valuable resources but the jungle is so dangerous and wild that most visitors wouldn't know where to begin to look.   The Great Jungle is even dangerous to the First but they have generations of wisdom of Skinks and Sauri built by trial and error and normally receive extensive training in the Great Jungle's Good, Bad, and Ugly before they are sent out into the wilds alone.   The First Children of the Old Ones practice some farming but they are able to get roughly half of their food from hunting and gathering, something none of the other Forces of Order can claim.   The Great Jungle is home to many poisonous and curative plants that the Skinks carefully harvest and sometimes cultivate.   Most shields and armor are created from the hides of slain jungle beasts. Bronze or obsidian is prefered for weapons and tools but serviceable weapons and armor can be made from the bones of many jungle creatures.   The Great Jungle has comparable mineral resources underground compared with most places across the World Pond, it's just hard to find and get to with all the jungle foliage above it. In order for miners to be successful in most of Lustria, magic needs to be used so they know exactly where to dig.

History

Originally, Lustria was rich with life but it was a gentle Edenic paradise. The Great Cataclysm set large portions of the Great Jungle ablaze, and some species of plant and animal went extinct forever but it could have in theory been regrown more or less as it was before.   After the Great Cataclysm, the Slann infused the jungles of Lustria to increase it's muchness.   The trees grew much taller, the clouds of insects became much denser, the swamps became much wider and deeper, the predators became much more fierce. The number and strength of the poisonous plants grew much deadlier.   In short, the jungles of Lustria became a potent geographic barrier to outside invaders, while still being able to be traversed somewhat safely by the First Children of the Old Ones.

Tourism

Very few beings outside of the Lizardmen are actually interested in the Great Jungle or its resources, most outsiders veiw the Great Jungle as a barrier to reaching the Lizardmen Temple Citys hoards of treasure.
