We had an opportunity to stay at Gold Haven, but goody-two-shoes insisted we leave early. I guess she just really wants to make sure she doesn't inconvenience the king by taking too long to die, or maybe a real bed with no rocks or sticks is hurting her back.
We made it to the town of Grimdell (sounds like exactly the sort of place everyone wants to live right?), and things were (of course) grim.
We met the prince, Warrick Varunn, who was interested to hear that his father sent us. When someone spilled the beans that we are headed to the Mournlands he seemed a little "off". I am pretty sure we aren't the first sentenced to a convenient, out of the way elimination by the Varunn thugs. He was here with the Dawn Guard, a bunch of semi-rich sissys who "guard against the darkness" - I think EW will fit right in. Just our luck, the grim town of Grimdell didn't just have to be unfortunate enough to host the kings's son and his grim little knight friends, no, it was about to be grimly devoured by a grim horde of grim zombies. So of course we decided to stay in the grim little inn on the grim little square, because why not, nothing bad could happen in a town with such a cheery name.
Of course, the zombie horde arrives early while we were still sleeping, and my gods what a nightmare. There must have be a hundred of the sloppy, foul creatures.
What happened next cannot be believed - the Dawn Guard was just engaging them when the fool, cruel sword drug me down to assist shadowman and Bibiana as they rushed out; Rei and Katrine staying behind to get EW's massive armor on. The sword lent me its brain melting power, staggering the zombies as Kabuto unleashed a huge explosion, blowing them into ludicrous gibs. But the real power, of course, came from the awe-inspiring fate twister, who just walked into the horde like it was a stroll in a park and, with a shout, simply turned them in to a purplish dust that dissipated in the wind. Seconds, the zombie horde simply disappeared in seconds. We just stood around and waited for Kathrine and Rei, the horde just melted.
For the first time since I had that terrible dream I smiled, maybe the king can't kill the fates own devil, and maybe, just maybe, the rest of us can stand close enough to help her twist her fate and ours into one we will survive. Could I share a fate with the fate twister? Maybe, and maybe may be enough.
