Reborn again from the Agean. I died again! I seem to have misjudged the Scotsman. He seemed the sort where a friendly duel would have been fine, but he went and killed me? What a scoundrel. My loss also proves to me that I must not be as good as I once was. Say what you will about my military days, but the constant drills were a great way to stay in top form. I never would have lost to that honorless Scot if I had been in good condition. I'll need to recommit myself to my skills, if I still hope to live up to the destiny the gods have seen fit to give me.
I swam back to shore to the usual village, where I was greeted with the familiar confusion, followed by a strange sort of recognition. Around here, my rebirths have become something of a local legend. In return for their hospitality, I shared some stories of the outside world and showed the young men a few combat techniques. My stay was short however, as I still had business in France. I thanked the locals and went on my way. In a way, it's nice to have some small amount of a legend to my name, although it would be disappointing if this local curiosity was all the Gods had in store for me...
I took a ship back through Rome, in hopes Roderick might be able to assist my journey north. Alas, the man was out monster hunting. I should like to join him again sometime, if the opportunity presents. Our battle against the Cyclops remains a highlight of my immortal life, and he seems to have good sources for finding monsters, in addition to the skills to fight them. His household, however, was helpful enough to lend me some basic gear, and helped me find a caravan heading north to France. In the past I've often worked as a guard to make a little coin while I find my way to distant lands.
I returned to France and found my way to Lady Eta's estate. I was able to recover my weapons and armor, and it seems like the rest of the team was able to finish her mission. She kept her end of our bargain and told me that Geoffroi would be at a regular occurring meeting in about 20 years, so I could find him there after the meeting is finished. I was grateful, but since I hadn't really done anything to help, I told her I didn't want credit for the victory of others. I would pay her back for the intel later, though I have no interest in entering her service. I've been around long enough to know that countries die same as mortals, and that even with her help, France too will be nothing more than memory in a couple centuries. She disagreed, or rather, seems to believe that she can do better than history's greatest leaders.
With a lot of time on my hands and not much to do, I ended up traveling back to Rome. If I have to wait two decades for Geoffroi to show up, I might as well see if Roderick has any leads on worthwhile battles.
{Time spent with Roderick}
I eventually received word from Lady Eta about the meeting, so I went back to France where I was finally able to meet the elusive Geoffroi. A small, meek man, but an immortal all the same. He expressed having difficulty traveling France, and every death and robbery was a significant setback in his search for the Standard of the Lost Legion. With my aid, however, he would be able to follow the tracks without fear of being harassed by brigands and ruffians. We spent a long time traveling together, broken only once by an unfortunate incident in which I caught the uncommon malady that has been sweeping the countryside. But Geoffroi did his investigation and eventually found the Standard was most likely in the possession of the French Royal Family. He suggested that if we could get into contact with them somehow, the Logios might be able to present a trade for the standard. From there, he found a lead that the French Prince would be heading to the city of Orleans, and we traveled there to await his arrival.
In waiting, a new opportunity for glory presents itself: Orleans comes under siege from the English! Perhaps the Gods themselves served us this fortuitous moment. Battles against overwhelming odds are the perfect place for a warrior of legend such as myself! It's also somewhat lucky because I might have been torn between this opportunity and my duty to guard Geoffroi, but in defending the city, am I not also defending him? Perhaps if I make a name for myself here in this battle, it could even get us an audience with the prince when he arrives!
