Lawries Cottage

Lawries Cottage is a well-known and large roadside inn and tavern located on the Severin Road between Phandalin and the North Coast region of the Trotternish  Although the volume of traffic on the Severin Road has dropped significantly, the inn still enjoys a fairly steady amount of clientele. On any given day, the bar room can be found well populated, even if the inn has fewer overnight guests than during its heyday.

Purpose / Function

Lawries Cottage has served as the only sleeping and eating establishment between Dun Skudburgh and Phandalin on the Serverin Road. It also served for many decades as an outpost for the infamous Black Watch, whose charge is to patrol the roads of Albion and keep the peace for The Righ.

Alterations

The original building was a small, single story tavern. As traffic on the Severin Road increased the need for an inn became apparent. The owners (the Lawrie Clan) added sleeping rooms and accommodations for horses and transports. Eventually the Lawries added a second floor and a surrounding courtyard.

Architecture

Lawries Cottage is a post and beam building with lath and plaster walls. The courtyard wall is made of stone, while the courtyard itself is paved with local flagstone.

History

Lawries Cottage has played its part in the history of the North Coast and the Trotternish, as well as Sgitheanach Dubh  The cottage served as an outpost for the Black Watch, which patrolled the roads and paths of the Trotternish and the Sgitheanach Dubh working to keep the peace. The inn served the Black Watch especially well during The Hard Times and The Dark War. A set of buildings arose around the inn to help serve the needs of the Black Watch and the many travelers during those tough years. Currently many of those buildings no longer exist with less than a handful still standing.    Although the Black Watch no longer uses the inn as an official outpost, the groups members occasionally stay at the inn and are always welcomed by the current owner Rasano Lawrie. A special room area and set of rooms on the second floor is reserved for the exclusive use of the Black Watch.
