Soutlands
Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
The Soutlands is a massive tundric expanse that lies on the border of the Meridiem circle.
Technically, one could walk from the Soutlands all the way to southern Alantris, however this would be a dangerous journey, and no such expeditions have yet to be recorded.
It is bordered to the west by the frigid waters of the Southern Melentine, to the north by the Principality of Burundy, the Kingdoms of Vladia and Valonbray, and to the east by the Espar and South Sea.
Geographically, the Soutland is, for the most part, a frozen boreal wasteland bereft of all trappings of civilization, albeit, one so large that it could fit the entirety of any modern kingdom into it several times over. Stalked by all manner of gruesome monsters, the tales northerners tell of it fail to fully encapsulate its brutality.
Few crops grow here, for the land is hard as iron and the howling winds cut like daggers of purest cold, and it is for this scarcity that the Southrons have learned to spurn the sickle and ploughshare, instead deigning to take what they need to survive from the lands of weaker men with the axe and sword.
A network of fjords and mist-clouded isles wreathes the coasts, and it is from here that the Southron build and tether the longships with which they terrorize the shores of the southern world.
Scattered coastal settlements provide some respite from the harshness of the elements, but even they are regularly assaulted by frozen monsters and other such horrors. Further inland, however, the great fjords give way to frozen steppes where brutal tribesmen hunt their game, taking care to avoid the bone-carpeted lairs of white dragons.
It is a grim, shadowy land where the weak do not live long, and where living means a constant fight for survival and supremacy. The landscape is famed chiefly for its mighty and foreboding mountain ranges; such as the Jotunmonts, the Mountains of Endless Night, and the Mountains of Fruminheim.
In the distant past, sometime during the end of the third age, Vaskerry tribes set off to explore the world. Several found their way to the far southern pole, and discovered it reminded them of their homelands. Settling here, they thrived in raiding tribal societies until the second fall.
A fierce and warlike people, the inhospitable nature of the Soutlands became their salvation, many tribes finding shelter from the Sundered in the frozen south, outlasting the ruinous power until the Nongod's defeat by the Knights of Harmony of Harmony.
It is from these survivors that modern Southrons were sired.
