Helix

Helix is a jovial and wise corsair who boasts a strong connection to The Dream World. He is one of the party's founding members. As a Scalfi, his imposing size often intimidates those who first meet him, but those who take the time to get to know Helix will find a kind and charitable heart rests beneath his armored shell. In battle, Helix deploys his familiars to help him fight, including Tojiro the Blade, a hawk that can transform into a katana. He also makes smart use of his Illithid Gauntlet which gives him the powers of telekinises.

Early Life

Born with the name Boris Decland, Helix never knew his people's home sphere, Tyrant. However, like all Scalfi, the sphere's destruction left indelible marks on his life. He spent much of his early years aimless and searching the spheres for answers about his people. He became the captain of a pirate ship called Io's Blood with his brothers, Ulys and Gorge. However, his pirate career seemingly got cut short when his ship was attacekd by a rival pirate ship called the The Dark Home, captained by Klarisia, the leader of the Scourge of Io. Helix was captured by the The Dark Home while his brothers were left adrift. However, he was eventually accepted into this crew. He increasingly saw The Dark Home as his family, and in time, abandoned the name of his birth to adopt a name given to him by his crew, Helix. He developed a special relationship with Klarisia, who taught him the ways of The Dream World and gifted him with a pair of telekinetic gauntlets. He also befriended her kitsune first-mate, Scythe, who wielded the weapon of his namesake and taught Helix the ways of the blade.   Eventually, Helix's past came back to haunt him when the name Boris Decland resurfaced. Although, this time, it didn't belong to him, but had been coopted by an unknown party to lead a violent insurgency against the Homyn. Helix saw a crisis approaching among the Scalfi people and sought help from Klarisia. While the captain had grown attached to Helix, she realized that in order to return the Scalfi to peace, Helix would need credibility and standing among the Chimera Alliance that her pirate crew simply could not offer him. So, she sent him to Lion City to meet her childhood friend and leader of the Corsairs, Jin Bei, to hopefully earn Helix a place among the order.

Joining the Corsairs

Helix arrived in Lion city a stranger. Not only did the metropolises crowds prove an obstacle, but he found his people the victim of harassment and violence. Upon arriving at the docks, he found a helpless Scalfi beaten down by an angry group of Homyn. He easily proved their match, but not before the victim of the attack suffered a terrible beating. Helix took the injured Scalfi to find a doctor. The only person who would see him was a blind koan physician named Prosper Augustus, who lived in the Imperial District. As it happened, he was also a friend of Jin Bei and often treated members of the Corsairs. Helix also befriended Prosper's grandaughter, a precocious and hyperactive young Koa named Swan.   Prosper agreed to treat the injured Scalfi, but in exchange asked Helix's help in procuring help from Scalfi shaman in the area to treat the astral injuries of a corsair, a Kitsune named Kylia. Helix set about Lion City to find the scalfi who lived in the area. Much to his surprise, he encountered the Scalfi who had been using his name, none other than his brother Ulys . Ulys had become radicalized to the Scalfi cause when their brother Gorge was killed by Homyn working for an organization called the White Lion Armada. Believing Helix long dead, Ulys took on his birth name to win the Scalfi shaman to his cause. But Ulys was not happy to learn of his lost brother's return. He viewed Helix's service to a Homyn Captain as a betrayal to the Scalfi people. Helix was able to leave the encampment with his life and the spiritual remedy he sought, only because the scalfi he rescued at the docks was one of Boris Decland's soldiers.   Upon returning, Prosper was able to revive Kylia just in time for Jin Bei to arrive. He explained that an organization called the White Lion Armada led by the Homyn Prince Lucas had been antagonizing Scalfi in hopes to ingratiate themselves to their Homyn adversaries. In order to restore peace between the Scalfi and the rest of the system, Helix would need to not only confront his brothers but the Homyn prince himself. Jin Bei instructed Helix to go to the nearby moon, Aspidie to meet with other Corsair hopefuls he had recruited to take the exam.

The Corsair Exam

Upon arriving at Aspidie, a bounty hunter approached Helix offering him a golden lion for information on the whereabouts of Simon Albrecht. Helix brushed the bounty hunter off and went looking for a bed to enter The Dream World and find Jin Bei. At a tavern called the Gargling Ghillie, he met Simon, Wukong, and Jaime and learned that they too had been recruited by the corsair leader.   Exploring the town, he met an already-established Corsair named Blaine, who hawked a disgusting-smelling cologne called "Corsairs for Men." Helix was the only member of the party to wear the signature scent, a decision that proved beneficial later in the day when Helix was able to use the cologn to lure a band of Ghillie away from the rest of the party.   When Prince Lucas ignited a hyperion bomb that would destroy, Aspidie, Helix used his telekinetic gauntlets to throw Jaime onto the prince's airship. Escaping the moon, he saved a group of Xabron that had been enslaved by the White Lion Armada and dropped them off with the admiral of Lion City's defenses, Chernabog.   During Princess Halle's birthday party, Helix and Simon snuck into the royal chambers with the help of Prosper Augustus, who gave the royal family's pet Lion, Balabar, a stomach ache to distract the guards. He also ran into one of the founders of the White Lion Armada, Thane Kestrel, where he used his telekinetic gauntlets to spill Thane's drink on his clothes. When he went to change outfits, the party was able to pilfer an invitation to the Black Sail Auction from his old clothes.   During the Corsair exam itself, Helix found himself along in the imperial city when Simon and Wukong got themselves captured by mutants. He befriended the slave of another corsair candidate, Prince Sadhi, named Yuba. With Yuba's help, Helix was able to free the other corsair candidates and help the mutant King Kaloo fend off a coup from his subordinate, Grokus. Helix passed the Corsair exam with flying colors, earning the votes of three of the five members of the Chimera Council.

Catching a Firefly

While exploring Lion City, Helix visited a black market for artifacts called the Bone Market, located on the spine of the space serpent Atrabaxis. There, he found a stall offering the services of a Fey Sullied, named Melfina, who could see the history of artifacts by touching them. Helix tried to give her his guantlet to identify, but she returned it to him in a panic, shoving gold into his hand to leave her alone.   The scene caught the attention of an organization known as the Firefly Society, a group of Corsairs and professors who work for the Homyn Academy of Natural Sciences to hunt for artifacts and study ancient cultures. Helix managed to work out a deal with the Firefly Society that would get him and his friends admission into their order in exchange for letting them use the artifact for a special job that their leader, Anderson Lake, had been cooking up.   Helix accepted a job from the Firefly Society to retrieve an equation from a Ryllian satellite that would assist the Academy in calculating the true age of the universe. However, the job ran into complications when a group of Ninja retained by Countess Bellari attacked the group. Helix managed to defeat the Ninja and recover the equation, and even saved an unlucky Ninja named Rin, who had been abandoned by his clan in naught gravity during the fight. Rin was so grateful, he agreed to join the Corsairs, making him the first non-corsair member of thir crew to be recruited.

Leaving the Party

During the party's adventures in Lion City, Helix also took on a job to escort a Koan author named Karina Odwalla who was working on a book called Saga of the Seven Shells that told the story of the Scalfi who sacrificed themselves and their planet to stop a terrifying monster from beyond the rim. He managed to escort the author safely to port, only to watch her murdered by her own grandson. He claimed the reason for his violent actions was because Odwalla had been pressured to change the ending in light of Aspidie's destruction into one that would be less inflammatory. He claimed that he killed her to protect the integrity of her life's work and demanded Helix hand over the book.   Helix declined the grandson's invitation, instead taking it upon himself to finish the book. Deciding that this task was his best hope for easing the tensions between the Scalfi and the other races, Helix bid the party a reluctant farewell so he could undertake this project.

Adventures in Io's Orbit

Helix returned to the party briefly during their adventures in the Homyn Kingdom. He had improved his abilities much on his travels sporting an improved telekinetic gauntlet and the ability to transform his familiar, Tojiro, through apotheosis.   On the moon Nimbus, Helix helped the party rescue a pair of captured handmaidens (one of whom was a Homyn spy) from the Scourge of Io. He used his knowledge of their customs and his connection to Klarisia to arrange a duel between Wukong and the pirate captain, which allowed the party to free both hostages despite having a ransom for only one.   He also helped the party recruit their chef, Noah, on Mons Mirror, infiltrating the high-end restaruant where she worked by pretending to be a sugar salesmen. As the only corsair with any musical talents, he became the group's de facto leader during Ezra's recruitment mission when the party was shunted into an alternate timeline where music dominated all. He tried to smuggle his friends into high society by pretending they were instruments in an avante garde style of music that used a choir of musically-inept people. The ruse backfired and ended up getting the party chased by guards for using non-sanctioned instruments.

A Professor on Nimbus

After saving Holly Tide on Nimbus the spirit of Holly Tide granted Anh Edonia's wish to improve Homyn education on the topic of Scalfi. The Spirit of Holly Tide granted Anh's wish by recruiting Helix to create an annex to the Academy on Nimbus dedicated to the study of Scalfi culture. While Helix's mission often takes him away from the party during their adventures, he now supports them in spirit as a patron using his newfound resources to give them advice and books helpful to their journey.
