House of Nightkeeper (Area of Concern: Nightwatch)
The Dwarven Nightkeeper Family is one of the eight non-human families of the Noble Court. While officially they follow the Eight human constellations (most purporting to worship the Soldier or Thief), they are secretly worshippers of the forbidden survivor deity Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms. Before the human restructuring of the court, the Nightkeepers were the city jailors and nightwatch.
Structure
Vizier and Viziera
Vizier Bentham Nightkeeper: Although officially a Tinkerite, Vizier Bentham Nightkeeper, like all his family, is actually secretly a worshipper of the forbidden Dwarven (and Drow) deity, Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms. He is harsh and uncompromising but his extreme lawfulness follows the teachings of Panopticon rather than the official laws of the city.Viziera Galia Nightkeeper: Although she presents herself as a Thievian, Viziera Galia Nightkeeper, like her husband, secretly worships Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms. She wears chainmail at all times and styles her beard in a way that is feminine, and only just approriate for her position of Viziera. However, upon close inspection, her beard is just wild enough that her Dwaven heritage is not being sacrificed for the sake of propriety.
Subvizier and Subviziera
Subvizier Webb Nightkeeper: Partygirl Subvizier Webb Nightkeeper can usually be seen near the alcohol at any gathering, although this is more of a front so that people lower their guard around her. Although officially a Soldierite, Webb, like her parents, actually worships Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms.Culture
Nightmares
"As for the dwarves. They are united in two primary fears that shape their nightmares. They fear the anarchy of a world insufficiently watched. And they fear the dreadful consequences should it transpire that the wrong sort of people may be watching them."The Man Who Is Not There tells Lindie Asklepa the nightmares of the Noble Court.
Religion
Nightkeepers do not have an official family deity and for that reason they don’t have any real bias in their hiring policies for religions. Their Estate has a cleric for all of the Eight major deities. However in actuality, every Nightkeeper servant is selected from a few "safe" families, who are proven members of the Pupils and Hands.
Although secretly worshippers of Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms, in the official documentation and paperwork, Bentham is a Tinkerite, Galia is a Thievian and Webb is a Soldierite.
As a result of their secret religious following of Panopticon, the Nightkeepers only ever vote Banish (or sometimes Forgive) in Whisper Votes. Panopticon views murder as a major taboo, and since banished nobles are stripped of their Nobility and familial protection, it is easier for the Nightkeepers' vigilante justice to step in and secretly imprison the banished nobles if they are still considered a threat by Vizier Bentham.
