As youngest child of the Underhand Vizier (Haruspex Underhand), Katiba Nycteme Underhand is still finding her feet at court, and is slightly less self-assured than the rest of her terrifying family.

Special abilities
As a Doppelgänger, Nycteme can change her appearance to perfectly assume the appearance of specific individuals. She can mimic the shape of any small- or medium-sized creature and gains some of their senses including scent and darkvision. Additionally, she can cast Detect Thoughts at will.

Although Doppelgängers are Things That Go Bump In The Night, and are therefore traditionally creatures of the Thing In the Downstairs Room, House Underhand are a family of Doppgängers who were stolen from the Thing by the Thief.
It is as yet unclear whether Nycteme or, for that matter, any of her family are willingly Thievians, although Nycteme does seem to wish she was able to wear colours, and in a conversation with Hugo Dargent while disguised as his sister-in-law has implied that she has at least thought about running away if she could.
However it is also worth noting that Nycteme and her cousin, Corvus, were visibly shaken when they believed that the Thing had extended Its influence enough to track them down, suggesting that they would not like to return the Its influence, even if they are dissatisfied under the patronage of the Thief.
