Ys (ʲɪs)
Ys is the southernmost of the Seven Regions. Directly south of the central Chaalai Sea. It is pronounced natively /ɪs/.
Tzolgarys /ʦolgɑɹʲɪs/—formally, "the Tzolgarin Kingdom of Ys"—is the largest unified nation of Gruthe. It encompasses almost the entirety of Ys. It is pronounced /ʦolxɑris/ in Yssian. Founded by Drennón Tzolagar /dɹɛnɔn ʦolægɑɹ/ in Qh’Raa; in the native Yssian it is rendered /eno:n ʦolɑxɑr/ (or the rarer archaic forms /trɛno:n/ → /tʔnoːn/ or /ʤnoːn/).
Its primary locations W → E, with their local pronunciations, are the scholarly city, Tlatl /tɬɑtɬ/ which serves as its de facto capital; the primary port-city, Garin-y̆-Gatlay /xɑrinjij xætɬɑj/; the de jure capital and residence of the Tzolgarin Dynasts, Cheotlin /xɛɔtɬin/; and the Ysfet /ɪsfɛt/ satrapy which includes the eponymous desert and citadel.
Geography
An east-west running region, ending in the eastern wilderness of the Suvata and the border with Dhaoshee in the west. On the north-south axis, Ys has three narrow bands which are largely uniform climatic environments. The southernmost band is dense jungles ultimately merging with the Suvata. The central band is the most verdant and productive in ancient volcanic soil; the vast majority of Yssians live here (indeed the Tlatl and Crown satrapies and their cities are located within the verdant band). The northernmost band, running along the Chaalai coast, is mostly arid and merges into desert—Ysfet—and then extending into the desert region that spans the length of the continent ending far to the north in the Llaohh Region.
Southernmost Ys, along its peninsula, tend towards rolling hills and various elevations, however the majority of Ys—all three bands—are dead flat. Ys is known as a flat land. A prominent exception would be the large hill that the city of Tlatl is built around and topped by the Grand Tzutlycan Library.
Ecosystem
Prevailing winds and landforms have made the Tzolgarin Kingdom of Ys largely the driest of the Seven Regions of Gruthe. Southern Ys does get rain from the ocean and is the exception. Rain is rare in the verdant band, and almost unheard of in the narrow band along the Chaalai coastline.
Mais, peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, crocodile, grains (millet, oat, rye, wheat), breads and beer are all raised prominently in Ys. Starchy tubers are eaten in large numbers by the Yssian smallfolk. Goats, sheep, and iguanas are raised as livestock. Ancient Ys had large populations of mammoths but they were extirpated approximately 300 PA.
Natural Resources
Yssians benefit from long and frequent growing cycles, raising numerous crops each year. They export grains and produce throughout the rest of the continent. Dhaoshee is their largest trading partner.
History
Ys was settled by peoples from Xitzol hundreds of years. A faction of the Tlatloch people, the Tlatotlys, departed from Xitzol and settled in what they would eventually call Ys. Tlatotlys
The Three Kindoms Era after the collapse of the Dwarven States Era, was composed of The Ptarshishin in the east; the Qhélssénnish in the west and the Tlatotlys in the south.
During the first century of the Qh'énnish Ascension, an Yssian exile, Drennón Tzolgar, staged a coup and toppled the last of the Tlatotlysi Dynasty, and assumed absolute control of the central satrapy. Afterwards sacked the rest of the Yssian satrapies and established the kingdom that now bears his name. However, despite conquering the previously independant satrapies, Tzolagar was content to let them continue to rule, provided they swore fealty and offered tribute.
Tourism
Pilgrims come to the city of Tlatl to seek the Grand Tzutlycan Library as it is the largest library in the known world.
Similarly, foreign nationals seeking enlightenment and/or magical and/or mystical training in Dhaoshee, travel through Garin-y̆-Gatlay, making it one of the busiest ports in the world.
Jade Yssian Home Glyph
Jade Green Yssian Glyph
by
包德強
Jade colour is of a universal import. This glyph is found in the garden of pillars throughout Eastern Ys, predominantly among the Tzapli Yssians.
This particular rendering of the home-glyph is from a pillar garden in Ysfet near its border with the Suvatan wilds. The home-glyph represents the Yssian people, the region of Ys, and the seal of the Tzolgarin Dynasts who rule the nation. It is ubiquitous, particularly when carved in jade, or painted in jade colouring.
