Sacred City

The area known as the Sacred City has been continuously occupied for more than 2000 years. The very stones of the buildings, many cyclopean and gigantic in proportion, are aged and ancient. During the difficult years from the end of the Second Age until the coming of Belintar, many of the temples, palaces and residences were fortified in what became known as the Sacred City of Nochet. With the recovery of the city, this area became the province of the Queen and the priestesses of Imarja.

The Queen of Nochet lives here as well as the great priestesses of the sacred temple, and the Grandmothers’ Council meets here imbued with the presence of Imarja. It is sprawling complex of courtyards, gardens, temples, and residences for nobles and privileged servants, with thousands of rooms, as well as storerooms, barracks, and so forth. The Queens continuously tear down old parts and build new complexes. Largely confined by its walls (though even those periodically are moved and changed), the Sacred City sprawls upwards and contains thousands of years of utterly inconsistent architecture. Nobody knows where all the corridors lead or where all the rooms are. The complex is five stories high in many areas and more than 5000 people live within its walls.

The Sacred City is a place of nobility and the nobles here include: the Queen and her household, advisors, and companions; the priestesses of the various temples (many of whom are semi-hereditary in the role) who form the permanent nobility here; senior scribes and bureaucrats who form the permanent “administration”, such as it is; and the Noble Husbands who are the officers of the Esrolian military.
