Trass

The continent of Trass lies in the northern hemisphere of the World of the Long Sleep. It is the largest and most important contemporary landmass.   In North West Trass are the lands of legend, through which Klane Kalonia rode in the times before history had awakened, during the Season Of Innocence. Then, they were sparsely populated grasslands, with great craters, glassy seas and wide windy plains. The Gene Sea covered the Earth, the Rider Tribes held sway and the Enclaves and the Conclave watched over them. It is here that the city of Aberstone, first of the seven Foundation Cities, became the home of the Court of Sunrise and the parliament of the New Sophisticates at the beginning of the Foundation Age.   In later years, the centre of power and population would move to the east, and the north eastern region in particular, which is the home of the Foundation Cities of Anoomenon, Paratomb and Vesper with a number of other important cities from later ages, the most noteworthy of which is Kingcardine, the capital of the House of Thorns during the time of the Succession Empires.   When reviewing the main continental map on the right, you can use the layers function, to the top right of the map itself, to show these two important regions in the context of the whole continent. Click in the zone when this overlay is shown to bring up a more detailed regional map at a larger scale, or access them directly from the right hand column.   To the south of the Holme sea, is an area that became more important during the time of the Succession Empires when it was controlled by the Low Armies of Blyperrin and their allies at Monrith.   In the south of Trass is a horizontal band of sand dunes and dry plains, known as the Midlat Desert Zone. This is bounded by two linear mountain ranges to the north and south. The artificial geometry of this region is circumstantial evidence for the unnatural sculpting of the continent. Weather patterns enforced by ocean circulation and prevailing belts of wind, take moisture to the north or south where it feeds the fertile lands either side of the zone, leaving the central belt dessicated and uninhabited. The foundation city of Freewater once occupied the site of an oasis in the middle of the eastern desert. Ground water, fed from the Saphire Lakes region via a suspiciously unnatural porus seam in the rocks, emerged here to support the only habitable conditions for many miles. The city has now been abandoned when its source of water was disrupted by an earthquake known as the Dry Slip in 2512 A.F. during the age of the Long Northern Peace.   The lands below the South Barrier mountains have always been less populous than those to the north. The most important early activity in this region was mining in the Metal Hills south of Freewater. Due to the rugged cliffs and terrible currents of the Cruel Coast to the south, no decent harbour could be established close to the mines and their product was conveyed across the desert via Freewater, helping to enrich that city. The only important city in the area is Sonnring which was founded in later and much more advanced technological times as a client of Anoomenon, designed to offer spaceport facilities. Its location closer to the equator made it a better site than Anoomenon itself could have been.   To the south and east of the main continent is a large island called Trasslow which is more usefully thought of as an adjunct to Trass.
