Asgardians

The Asgardians, known to humans as the Norse Gods or Old Gods, are a humanoid race of sapient extradimensional beings native to the Nine Realms.

The are descendants of Buri, who according to their own myths was one the first three beings to ever exist. Despite the naming conventions, they are not only native to Asgard. They are divided into two distinct cultures, the Aesir of Asgard and the Vanir of Vanaheim.

In previous centuries they visited Midgard regularly and were worshiped by the humans of Scandinavia, the British Isles, and other parts of Northern Europe. The religion fell out of favor due to the rise of Christianity in the 10th century.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The skin, muscle, and bone tissues of Asgardians are about three times as dense as the same tissue of a human body, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight. Because of this, they are also considerably more resistant to physical injury than human beings. They are capable of withstanding great impact forces, exposure to extreme temperature or atmospheric pressure, and falls from great heights without sustaining physical injury.

Biological Traits

Despite their natural durability, it is possible for Asgardians to sustain injury. However, if injured, their highly advanced metabolism enables them to recover with superhuman speed and efficiency. According to Victor von Doom, a normal Asgardian can live without their heart for up to 5 minutes with fully normal nervous system function, and can heal from the wound provided the heart is replaced.

Genetics and Reproduction

They are sexually dimorphic mamals and reproduced sexually, via allogamy.

Growth Rate & Stages

Asgardians are considered to have reached adulthood at around 1,000 years.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

All Asgardians, Æsir and Vanir, speak All-speak, an almost universally mutually intelligable magical language.

Historical Figures

Due to their long lives and small population size, there have been few important figures in their history who are not still alive, but some key figures include Bor, the first Æsir, Njord, the first Vanir, and Odin, who conquered most of the Nine Realms, creating the modern Asgardian Empire.

Common Myths and Legends

According to their own myths, they are the descendants of Buri, who came into being shortly after the birth of the universe itself. His exact origins are unknown, and a variety of stories are found in Asgardian and Human records, including:
  • He came into existance sponteneously in the primorial ice and was licked out by Amdula, a mystical cow
  • He came into existance sponteneously but emerged from the ice by himself
  • Amdula licked his form into existence from an ice block
  • He was the son of Ymir, the legendary first Giant
  • He was born from Ginnungagap (the primordial darkness) the same way and at the same time as Ymir
