Famed diplomat Aotsuki Tsukamoto is sent to Iyo Province to meet with the resident clan's Daimyō, Nishiuwa Matsutake. The journey takes him a day, and upon arrival, he is welcomed warmly. Matsutake explains that he has no love for the actions of the Chōsokabe Clan, but also cannot forge an official alliance with the Hashinara due to existing ties with the Mōri Clan. He connects Aotsuki with three of said Oni clan's emissaries: Hoshikuma-dōji, Toraguma-dōji, and Kanaguma-dōnyo.
Following his diplomatic mission to Iyo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returns to the Hashinara camp with a legion of Oni in accompaniment, loaned to him by representatives of the Mōri Clan.
With Oni forces on loan from the Mori Clan, Hashinara forces begin their march north from Awa to Chosokabe Clan-occupied Sanuki. Their objective is to defeat Forsaken forces stationed at Takamatsu Castle and return control of both the fortress and the province to Motoyama Tsugutoshi, Daimyō of the Motoyama Clan.
Three generals of the Ōeyama-dōji assigned to aid the Hashinara by the Mōri Clan meet in conference with Katsusada Shishauezaemon to orchestrate a plan of attack against the Chōsokabe Clan at Nankoku. Toraguma-dōji, Hoshikuma-dōji, and Kanaguma-dōnyo advise a careful assault, with a squad of Oni stationed outside of the castle to catch any escaping generals and ensure that the clan is fully destroyed.
In order to facilitate communications between the Hashinara Clan and Mōri Clan, a single Oni Musume is added to Shigeaki Fujino's mental network.
While the other generals are preoccupied with events in Wakigami, Aotsuki Tsukamoto fulfills his mission of traveling to the province of Iyo on the northern edge of Shikkoku. There, he meets with Nishiuwa Matsutake, Daimyō of the minor Nishiuwa Clan. Although Matsutake is not able to form an official alliance with the Hashinara due to his existing ties with the Mōri Clan, Aotsuki is able to negotiate for favorable trade agreements and access to the location's extensive shipyards.
Hashinara Yoshitakatomo begins her* plot by casting a series of spells on her*self that render her* virtually undetectable to mortal beings. She* then calls upon Shigeaki Fujino to relocate to a spot just outside the Mōri Clan's arena in Shimonoseki. From there, Yoshitakatomo breezes invisibly past a few Oni guards, and enters the location where fallen combatants' bodies were seen being taken. Within, Yoshitakatomo chooses the right fork at first intersection. This leads her* to a storeroom, but her* quasidivine senses pick up a trail of blood leading down a side staircase apart from the main passage. Below, a solid stone door closed with a magical locks blocks her* progress, but she* simply casts a spell to become immaterial and phases through it. Inside is a ritual space, divided with a white veil, that is apparently used for the resurrection of those who fall in the tournament. Crystal gourds, some containing flickering souls, line the walls on shelves, and four stone slabs are aligned on the floor in the center. Only one slab is currently occupied by the body of the boy Shōta, who lies there as though forgotten. Yoshitakatomo decides not to act further in this room, but feels a gaze burrow into her* back as she turns to leave. Magically lifting the divider, she* finds a raised wooden platform and a wall covered in glaring white hannya masks with blood-red horns and piercing yellow eyes. Understanding this as some type of Oni cultural phenomenon, she* contacts Kubokuma-dōnyo, who informs her that the hannya mask symbolizes retribution and imminent death from some broken oath, as well as that so many in one place is probably seriously bad news.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
No sooner had Fubuki magicked the sword binding Kashirin away than yet another strange event interrupted the ill-fated Mōri tournament. The more keen-eared of those in the crowd noticed it first, and brought it to the attention of their allies. A low, whistling sound was steadily growing in volume as something approached the stadium at high speed. It was not Kashirin's prisonous sword, but rather a black spear shooting down from the heavens directly at Maxim.
Post-tournament, as the crowds began to leave the Mōri arena in Shimonoseki, several Hashinara generals, too, found interests elsewhere to pursue. Aotsuki Tsukamoto traveled to Mino Province with Saitō Dōsan to handle the leftovers from some of his previous days’ adventures. As well, Ryūzaki Sanosuke returned to Wakigami upon the request of Tōdaisen Nobuhara, to help him clean up a mess that had sprouted up in the generals’ absence. That left Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Maxim in the dwindling crowds.
When Akashi Kengyō departed, he left Maxim and Ikeda Tsuneoki face to face and blade to blade. Invoking his knightly honor, Maxim offered his opponent one last chance to put down his weapons and surrender. Tsuneoki, however, was too wrapped up in his vengeance, pinning all of the injustices he had faced on the Hashinara Clan and refusing to back down. There could be no other outcome. Maxim challenged Tsuneoki to a duel.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
It was yet fairly early in the morning when those premier generals of the Hashinara Clan arrived at the doors of Yakisoba Yashiki. A heavy rain had begun to fall on their short journey over, clouds blotting out the sun overhead and casting an eerie shadow below. This effect seemed perfect for the dark Western mansion that now loomed before them. While not unheard of in international ports such as Shimonoseki, architecture like this was still very rare in Japan. The pervading feeling of the unnatural, the out of place, was only heightened by the glowing lights behind the mansion's crimson curtains and the infrequent flashes of lightning above. A sign just to the left of the door, obviously added as an afterthought, read: "焼きそば屋敷"
At the behest of Daimyō Mōri Motonari, many of the leaders from today's tournament arrived at Yakisoba Yashiki for lunch and a summit. Their topic of conversation was none other than the cataclysm which had broken the sky at the tournament but a few hours ago, and the creatures it had released into the world. Given that this was an event which could no doubt affect all of Japan, Motonari was disappointed to see how few leaders had opted to attend. Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the current Shogun, was at least in attendance, with her adviser Chitosemaru standing slyly behind her. Also present were Aotsuki Tsukamoto of the young Aotsuki Clan and the many other heads of the Hashinara hydra. Even Niiro Tadatsuru, Daimyō of the roguish Shimazu was lazily kicking her feet up on the table, with some manner of Wani whispering advice into her ear. No representatives of the Hōjō or Takeda arrived, however, and nor did anyone from the Alexandrian detachment visiting the city. It would have to do. As Hospodar Mikhail finished writing down their orders in his red velvet notebook and vanished to the kitchens, Motonari began the meeting.
After the Mōri Tournament finally concluded, the Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan found themselves pulled away for a spate of administrative tasks across their domains. It seemed as though an interminable time passed. Was it days? Weeks? Months? Half an entire year? No, it was but a single hour. At the end of such, each general received an urgent communication from Tōdaisen Nobuhara; a call for a meeting in person at Wakigami Castle. These events were growing less common as Shigeaki Fujino's mental network became more and more the norm for the Hashinara Clan. It followed, then, that whatever Nobuhara summoned them for was likely to be of great import.
