Mearscon (Mear-scawn)
Mearscon is the capital of Navarre and the largest city in the world. It rests on the western border of the kingdom next to the Shimmering Sea. The city is both a center of industry and trade as well as a central point of faith, magic, politics, and intrigue.
Three large plateaus make up Mearscon with its 14 districts spread out amoung them. The lowest plateau is known for its docks, warehouses, shipyards, and ever-present thieves. The higher plateaus are where noble houses, guilds, and the famed Silver Council that rule over Navarre can be found.
Mearscon is a center of trade between almost every other nation, either by sea, river, or overland. A common phrase merchants throughout Verenn use is "Everything goes through Mearscon."
History
Mearscon grew out of a much older town from the Bysren Empire, which in turn was built on the ruins of a previous Chelloran city that has long since vanished. The city (and its kingdom of Navarre) were ruled by kings for centuries. In the modern era, government body known as the Silver Council has stepped in to provide a democratic voice for the people. In just the last decade, with the passing of the last king with no heir, the Silver Council has officially moved into the position of leaders of the kingdom."The great city of Mearscon, trade capital of Verenn. For some, it is an amazing place. You can be anyone you want here and climb to great heights, as long as the nobles don't keep you in your place or the guards keep you on the other side of the city gates." - Dealer in the Grand MarketIn recent years, Mearscon has dealt with the loss, return, and then death of their king, supporting Iveron in the Frost War, and suffered heavy damage at the hands of the great dragon, Shale. With the terrible damage and near loss of the great city of Kanebren in the war with the Legion, Mearscon became the largest and most influential city in all of Verenn. And though Mearscon loves their new distinction as the greatest city, they are also work hard to provide support to Calaviaire, Iveron, and other regions to ensure growth and safety across the world.
Faith
While most all faiths are welcome in Mearscon, the Church of Soleen - Mearscon has been the official church of the city for many years. The priests of Soleen rebuilt their temple 20 years ago after its destruction. They are now in rebuilding it again back to its former glory at great expense. The temple of Kerahell is also represented in the city, and its religious leaders call Mearscon home.Government
The city, and Navarre itself, is ruled by the Silver Council. These leaders are chosen by the people of the city to represent them and their needs. While many can argue that this representation is spoiled by corruption, there is just as much to be said that the people of Navarre outside the city do not even get a seat in the council or vote in what happens.Challenges
Despite its wonders, Mearscon faces many challenges. Political intrigue within the Silver Council can lead to instability, while the divide between the rich and the poor grows wider. The presence of thieves and smugglers in the Lower Plateau threatens the peace and dangerous magic is used in the shadows. External threats loom as well, from pirates on the Shimmering Sea to ambitious rulers in neighboring lands who envy Mearscon's wealth and power. Yet, through all its trials and triumphs, Mearscon endures. It is a city of dreams and wealth, where the pursuit of power, gold, and knowledge never ceases. It stands as a beacon to the ambitious, the desperate, and the adventurous, a place where history is made and the fate of the kingdom of Navarre is shaped.Locations
