The Arrival...

by Samuel Marlowe

The last thing that we see and hear in the Time Tunnel lab, are someone knocking a lever accidentally and the Director swearing and saying that the new location is not a good place to be going.....

After travelling through the time tunnel, we find ourselves arriving in a pitch-black room that is about 15' square.
The floor is solid, but we seem to be moving unsteadily as if at sea.
Making out way out of the room, we enter a larger room roughly 30' square that seems to be some sort of cargo hold. Boxes of vegetable and fruit are lying opened and seem to be several weeks old.
Checking further, we find that we were actually in a 15' container in this cargo hold and there is another, identical containber in the cargo hold that is empty but smells of some sort of animal.
Making our way up the stairs there, we ascend to what is apparently the deck of a ship of some sort.
On the deck are more crates of food that have been rummaged through with bits of half-eaten food lying amongst them.
The odd thing about this is that the ship seems to be entirely deserted and floating in the ocean somewhere.

Further investigation reveals some unusual things about this ship. It seems to be constructed primarily of wood and it is propelled by a huge paddle wheel at the rear of the vessel.
Some sort of gas lighting fed by pipes from a central location is used in the ship.
Up in the wheelhouse, we find a large wheel and levers of some sort.
On a panel nearby, there is some sort of display that has a model of the ship on it with what we assume are it's coordinates.
Checking the coordinates on a map we find, it seems we are located at 105 degrees West, 5 degrees South, somewhere between South America and Africa.
There does seem to be an island nearby on the map.

Rosemary has discovered that the name of the vessel is "The Lady Vain".

While we are examining the wheelhouse, Klaus discovers the engine room and manages to start the engines up somehow and engage the paddle wheel.
As the ship starts moving, it's replica on the "map" panel starts to move as well. As we watch, the mysterious island to the North appears on the map panel.
After we stop again, we investigate the ship further and find the captain's cabin.
The ships log we find there describes the ship leaving Brazil with an undisclosed cargo heading to North Africa with a stopover at an unnamed island.
Even if we are not in the right place, we are in the right time, around the mid 1890s.

As we decide to head to the island, it comes to us that the odds of us being sent to a random location in the middle of the ocean and landing on a ship are incredibly large. That, combined with the Director's words as we left the facility, leaves us with much to ponder.....
