Personal history
As a small child he befriended Hope Van Dyne at various parents parties. When they were four, they’d agreed that they were best friends and best friends should have nicknames. Normal people called you by your regular name. But nicknames were for special people and reflected how special they were by whether someone else would have come up with it. This was when Tony started giving people nicknames. Hope’s nickname was Eternal, or E when they were talking fast. Tony told her how his mother said it was an important proverb, Hope Springs Eternal. It meant people always hoped. The Stark Effect was discovered by Johannes Stark and Antonio Lo Surdo. Although technically, Tony was named for his mother’s grandfather, Hope had said it reminded her of his explanations. So he was called Lo Surdo, Or Lo, for Tony Lo Surdo. Their salutations were:
“Stay sharp, Lo.”
“Shine on, Eternal!”
Despite this separation, TOny wanted Howard's attention. At age 6, he built a circuit board for his father. This proved, that not only was Tony a genius, but he was starting to surpass his father already. At age 9, he was transferred to Phillips Academy, where he continued his friendship with Hope Pym (Hope Van Dyne. At age 13 he graduated from Highschool and left for MIT where he met Rhodey (James Rhodes. He build DUM-E and earned his BS in Robotics/EE when he was 17 and Earned his Masters when he was 21 (1992). His father was killed by Winter Soldier

IN the original timeline, Stane is Tony's godfather and "friend" while gaslighting him following his parent's death. Eventually, he is selling SI weapons under the table until he orders Tony's death in 2008. Tony returns and kills him during Stane's 2nd attempt. In this timeline, Stane tried to take control of SI following Howard's death. Since Maria survived and Tony demonstrated a separation from the man, Stane is trying harder, earlier to control or destroy Tony. Tony is slowly freezing him of of the company, largely by having Maria buy Stane's stock in SI to undercut his control. Stane and Tony are the only two majority shareholders and Tony owns the larger bid

After Howard Stark's death, Tony Stark reached out tot he remaining Howling Commandoes. Dum Dum and Jim Morita started spending a lot of time with the Stark Family and eventually was seen as a pseudo-uncle for Tony. Tony came to depend on them for emotional support and assistance with the various kids who Tony helped. Dum Dum died the day Tony was rescued from terrorists in 2001
